i been using this tek: lest rest the grain for 6 - 12 hs in order to allow endospores to germinate, then boil 45'
how about boil first and let rest? then a quick heating for facilitate drying.

I dunno, I always thought standard procedure was to soak at least 12 hours, boil gently for ten minutes, drain. I sometimes put the rye on paper towels and newspaper to dry out a bit, but lately that hasn't worked - it's become too dry. My understanding is soaking first releases endospores, boiling kills 'em?

If you start your soak with boiling water then you wont need to soak as long to get proper moisture content. I dont know anything about how many endospores are going to be awake or not..

yes, soaking allows endospores to germinate and suitable to be killed by PC'ing. i don't remember exactly the purpose of boiling after 12 hs soaking. is great because when you pour the grain, the heat dries the surface and eliminates the excess water.

Why would you want to heat the water twice? seems like a waste of energy.
if anything, I wouldn't boil at all. Just pour dry to jars, add exact amount of water needed for ~50% saturation, let soak for ~12h and then straight to PC.
According to Stamets this method's shortcoming is uneven distribution of water, and I guess it might cause a bit more clumping, but it's definitely less time, fuel and water consuming.

JavaDog posted a really quick grain prep tek here,he gets dry grain hydrated in under an hour. I am looking forward to giving this one a try once I find a proper container to use inside of my PC.

Boiling the grain is just to make sure it absorbs as much water as possible.

I read somewhere that endospores germinate within 4 - 5 hours, anything longer than that and you are allowing them to recolonise and grow on your grains. How true is this? I don't know.
PS: thanks for the tek link Pseudotsuga, nice one
