coffee filter method?

ive often heard of removing the tape and covering with a coffee filter when nearing the end of colonization in a pf jar. does this have to be done? is it beneficial? is there a big contaminant risk? sorry i am such a newbie

no it does not have to be done but if your brf cake stalls it will get it going again place filter on with rubber band and flip the jar give the bottom a few taps till you hear a swish noise that will release the co2 speeding up the jars colonization

Save youself some work and get some tyvek for air exchange. It's free and it cut my colonization time in half.

The dry verm on top of the cake keeps contamination out even if you remove the tape; besides, once the top of the cake is colonized, it's fairly well able to resist any contamination that manages to get past the dry verm. Most contamination vectors are too small to be stopped by a coffee filter anyway.

Tyvek is made from very fine, high-density polyethylene fibers woven into sheets. It's what those almost-unripable FedEx envelopes are made of. You don't need it for the PF tek, but it's breathable and efficient at blocking contamination, so it's very handy for mushroom cultivation using whole grains.

I love tyvek. It does save time and makes me feel alot better about my cakes.
