PC help! asap answer needed : )

I just got my first PC... I fired it up with some syringes in it to sterilze them. Its one of the presto 6 quart models without a presure guage, but rather, a "presure regulater" which goes on the top and is supposed to "rock gently" when presure is 15PSI. It had been heating up and steaming for about 6 minutes and no rocking... I got worried that it would explode or something, so I turned it off... How long do they take to reach 15 PSI and does anyone else here have this model? WIll it be a noticeable rocking.. or just a rattling(i heard rattling) THANKs!

first i'd like to say that i'm not familiar with presto brand PC's so some of this may not apply to your situation.
you shouldn't need to worry about explosions; i'm pretty sure all PC's come with emergency valves nowadays. what you want is to get to the point where your regulator weight jumps and lets out a little burst of steam every minute or so. too hot and all your water will evaporate (and the weight will jump around like crazy).
i hope that helps

That rattling is probably the rocking. I can't really say for sure, but that's what mine does. When it's set to the correct pressure, it hisses a little almost constantly, but rattles -- it's loud and distinct -- every ten to fifteen seconds or so.

Well, i cant seem to get it right. I heat it up till it starts to rattle, then turn it down to the lowest heat setting, but after like 10 seconds on low it starts to ratle non stop... NOT like every 10-15 seconds. I dunno, will it explode the cooker to let it rattle non stop for an hour? I wish i knew more about these.

lol - is your PC new? If it is letting off steam it should be fine, if it stops letting off steam TURN IT OFF. But otherwise you should be ok, sounds like it's going to make a lot of noise but not blow up on you.

Ya, the thing is noisy as hell. It gets to the point that the weight at the top just rocks back and forth, not rapidly, but surely not once every 10 seconds, and lets off steam as it does this.. It sort of gets louder and louder slowly the longer I leave it at low heat.. So i ended up turning burner off for 3 minutes ever 10 minutes in a period of 45 minutes.... think they got sterilized?

Can you hear the water boiling in the PC? Although I don't have a PC of your type, I can definitely hear it boiling violently even on low heat. It sounds like if your PC was letting off steam at all times (meaning letting of excess pressure) and you had it set correctly for 15 psi, then you should be fine... my bad if you're not

"Can you hear the water boiling in the PC?" I could for the first 10 minutes of heat up, then it stopped and just started a hiss, then into the rattle that slowly got louder.

Hmmm... maybe do some test runs next time until you get your PC figured out. Well good luck in any case.

I would call it a steady rocking motion.. i was nervous about mine blowing up also. I just let it heat up and took cover behind a chair! but it turned out that just how they work its kind of a "clink clank clink clank clink clank" steady motion.... and maybe a "clunk" added in there somewhere on occasion

Aah, ok. That must be something different from mine. I think that you'd be ok with that rocking.
With most modern PCs you don't have to worry too much about them exploding, especially if they're new -- they have all sorts of safety features built in.
Look and see if you can contact the manufacturer to clarify what it's supposed to be like, if the Manual doesn't really say.
