Painted suillus (Suillus spraguei) in a sphagmum bog?
    #16946568 - 10/01/12 05:13 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

I thought these negros only associate with white pine, but today I found a large number of scattered specimen in a sphagnum bog in temperate North America. There were some tamaracks around, but I didn't see any pines. Is it a different species?

Oh, wait I just looked something up while I was uploading the pics. There are 2 Suillus sp. that associate with tamarack/larch:

Does anyone ever eat Suillus? How do you prepare them so they don't turn out slimy as hell?

People often peel the cap, and take off the pores, what you're left with is ...well... there are tastier shrooms.

What should I do, sautee? Should I add oil or water or will they be juicy enough on their own?

They should be wet enough, so no water, maybe some butter & garlic - 'cos butter makes everything taste better.
