does mycelium continue to grow after pinning?

if my great great aunt's friend's salamander understands correctly...mycelium has to stop growing before pinning and fruiting can occur...the salamander wants to know what happens if the cake is completely covered with mycelium on the outside but is not totally colonized on the inside...will mycelium continue to colonize the core as mushrooms grow or will that core remain an untapped wasted source of nutrients?

It will continue to colonize the center of the cake from what I have learned. A cake that is not fully colonized will not pin, unless Anno can tell me otherwise

mycelia is constantly growing even after pinning, it's always in search of moisture, nutrients, air, light etc...mix a spent casing with a bulk substrate and what happens? It begins to colonize the b.s.

so would it be possible to do the following:
spent cake --> casing --> spent casing --> bulk substrate?

Yes that is possible. Your mycelium is going to get tired though, you should go directly from spent cake to buld substrate probably... asking mycelium to have a few flushes in cakes, then a few as a casing, then spawn a bulk substrate might slow down colonization times.
