Jiffy Mix or Coco Coir?
    #1694219 - 07/07/03 09:13 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I have been doing 60/40 coir and verm TEK's lately, and have had some problems with cobweb. I use hydrated lime, have grade A clean substrate and make sure to sterilize my shit but for some reason it still gets contamed. Is Jiffy mix less prone to contamination than Verm/Coir? And if it isn't, is it better for casing mushies? Thanks

i have used jiffy mix and coir. for me, the jiffy mix contaminates much more often. that could just be coincidence, but i don't think so.

thousands would disagree. all casings dry out over time - it is precisely because coir changes colour as it dries (so you can see that it needs remisting) that makes it so useful.

What are you using for humidity lemun? How many air exchanges are you doing a day? Whats your substrate? Are you sterilizing your casing layer?

Funny story. I'm on my first time casing with jiffy mix. Before this I used straight verm, which in my opinion sucks. So my thais are coming but they are a very dissapointing strain to me. I get some cobweb, but the web doesnt even spread I've even got green on there but the shrroms just keep coming and the molds stay at bay. I don't think it has to do with the jiffy but I thought it was weird.

That is weird, i grow Thai's too, Lipa Yai's. They are good at colonizing but they are TERRIBLE fruiters, you should expect AT LEAST 2 weeks, i am upto one week and i cold shocked. I do agbout 4 air echanges a day minimum, sometimes more. My temperatures are from 70-75 mostly, occasionally they'll get to 80 but not for more than a few hours a day. I do about 85-96% RH, mostly around 90 or so. I like popcorn as a substrate, that's what is in the casing that contamed with cobweb, it was clean as hell and i put a 2" layer in there. As far as sterilizing, i sterilized in a microwave for about 10 mins, but then i let it sit a day... that might be my problem.

jiffy mix always caused the green stuff whenever my friend did his trays. The humidity was always fine and everything was rather sterile but this was in the fall/winter and constant temps were impossible.

damn lemun, sounds like everything is good. Are you using perlite for humidity or just misting your casings? I'm done with thais for now. This batch was very dissapointing, but live and learn.

Perlite actually. On a brighter note, my casing seems to be much better. I exposed it to fresh air (took the lid off) so it has lots of air exchange and low humidity, then i sprayed it with a 1.5% solution of H202 and it seems to be working. After one day, it doesn't smell anymore.

What's the cobweb smell like, anyway?

It's a fruity fermented kind of smell. Not really a bad smell, it's very pungent after a few days. It's kind of like a fruitiy wine.
