Gymnos?
    #16938555 - 09/30/12 01:59 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Found a couple of these guys, what do you think they are?
Found on the side of the road, classic mushroom smell, rusty spores, and I'm not sure about taste yet.
(I think I lost a thread somewhere)

Im surrounded by woods, I'm suspecting these were on roots.  Hopefully these will be a little clearer.

That is very creative!  More photos of this please....

How do you like my custom made mushroom dryer?  Duct tape, a safety pin and a ceiling fan on high?  Patent pending..

These look like gymno's right?  Sorry I don't have the other half, my pops was pulling out of my driveway and ran over them so I basicly have 2 1/2 left for the pile.

They *could* be gyms, but with those pics, I can't tell with absolute certainty that it isn't a Cortinarius rubellus (probably not)

Those are European right?  I'm thinking they don't have an annulus if I'm not mistaken.  Correct me if I'm wrong.  I'm basicly using a brick for a camera, what could I try and focus on that would be of help?

A few Cortinarius species have an annulus, but most don't.  Your pics are too blurry to ID them with confidence, but Gymnopilus junonius seems likely.  Check to see if they taste bitter, and also check where you found them to see if they are growing from buried wood/dead tree roots.

Gymnopilus grows on wood, Cortinarius directly from the ground.

They don't have an annulus, but sometimes leave a bit of a cortina, which is usually very faint, and probably wouldn't show up on a pic this blurry. I'm almost sure those aren't deadly corts, and I'm pretty sure that the darker orange band is a veil remnant, but just saying that the pictures are too blurry, for me anyways, to confidently say what it is.

Oh I guess they can grow in the US.  The two that still have stems, the annulus is solid and not like the cobweb I see just doing a quick search on corts.  After reading about corts I'm not too sure I want to taste them just yet.  Is there a physical trait that would distinguish the two I could check that the camera isn't capable of?

Well I went to where I found it and can't find any roots directly where it was growing, and I tasted it and it wasn't bitter it tasted like a store bought shroom that's been drying for a few hours.  Nothing remarkably bitter.  Slightly metallic really, maybe that's just in my head but I wouldn't say bitter at all.  It looks to be getting a greenish blue hue in some spots so I think I'll keep drying it out to see what happens and then chuck it.  I figure once the fungi spirits get their fill of dicking with me they'll hook me up somethin' proper.  How bitter are we talking, what's it comparable to?

The habitat shot is basicly on the side of the road/driveway but I live in the sticks surrounded by hard woods and pines.  There was 3 that I saw together, 1 1/2 got run over but they were clustered up to where the big one was over the smaller 2, and the spore print is a rusty red/yellow color.  Slightly stronger on the redish side, pretty much the same color as the gills.  And the greenish/blue hue (very faint) is kind of scattered but it looks like strong bruising (where I bit it for instance) is black like a bananna bruises.

Yeah I can do that, it may be a couple hours before I get them posted though.  Worst case scenario they'll be up here next time you sign in.  It's not really a group anymore though, it's the half a big guy, a tiny one with a chunk missing, and a 3rd chunk but I'll see what I can do.

Well it's just not meant to be.  I took some pictures but only two would upload and they don't really say much but the good news is since I put them under a light the two with stems have developed some blue slightly above and below the stem ring, and on this cap shot you can see some of the blotching people talk about.  Look middle right and you can see a slightly green/blue blotch.  I'm on a lap top and if I tilt the screen back to where it makes the screen darker it brings out the blotches a little better.
Since they're starting to get the shriveled up look I'll try to find a magnifying glass or something to shoot a picture through tomorrow and see if I can get a few pictures of the blue appearing on the stems.  When I hold the cap diagonally it's real obvious.  Unless the rub's bruise blue/green I think it may be safe to say these are actually Gymnos.

What I don't get is the bitter taste.  Now, I can gulp down calea, I actually like the taste of mushrooms, whiskey's no problem etc etc so maybe it's just me but I really wasn't picking up any kind of bitterness, just everyday mushroom.
