hyphal knots wont pin
    #1692527 - 07/07/03 08:26 AM (20 years, 8 months ago)

i have seven cakes in a terrarium- they all have hyphal knots on them, these hyphal knots just keep getting bigger and bigger, not one pin yet though... on one of my cakes the hyphal knots have a blue dot on them and seem to almost have stalled in growth -its been a little over a week and these balls have not pinned yet- what should i do dunk them?

don't dunk, wait a while, if the knots still don't pin then remove all of the tinypins and dunk. But give it time and give it plenty of air and light.

they aren't knots, they're probably just mycelium.

when you get knots, you'll know - they're only around for 12hours or so, before it gets a brown head and becomes a primordium (a pinhead, or pin). knots look like what comes out of a beanbag when it bursts on the carpet: do a search for knots. I posted one a long time back called 'from knots to pins' - try to find that one.

Yeah, my faery gmother had some fluffy balls of mycelium that she thought might be hyphal knots.  A few days later, the real hypal knots popped up

Remember to keep your eyes out for contam, wouldn't want all the work/waiting to go down the drain.  Good luck

Well I am having about the same problem you are having. I posted the picture below before i ended up double end casing the cakes with vermiculite. I was told these were hyphal knots, this is day 9 in the fruiting chamber and still no pins. So my best adivce for you is patience. I am trying to be, and hoping for the best. This is my first time growing. So best of luck to you and me.

What are the temperature, humidity, and lighting conditions in your fruiting chamber? All three are important. Temperature should be around 75F, humidity 100%, and enough light to see by for a few hours a day or so.
