Casing vs cakes, is there a dramatic difference?
    #1691406 - 07/06/03 11:51 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Its AFoAF's first time out of the gate here, and he is looking over pictures found in the grow guide forum. The pictures of cased shrooms seem to have a much larger yield than the pictures of caked fruiting.

He wants to know if the difference is really all that great, and if you guys think a total noob would be better off just sticking with cakes. He greatly appreciates all the help he has received from this forum, he just wants you all to know.

God, I hope he gets a computer soon, Im sick of typing this shit for him.

Total noob == do cakes.

Yes, though -- cases -do- yield significantly better than cakes. BUt cakes are good to get you doing things properly.

I actually recommend doing invitro, almost always fruits, never picture perfect but it gets the job done. Even with cakes most newbies get impatient and sometimes neglect their grow. But comparing cakes to casing, there is no comparison. Casing is much better. yeilds bigger fruits. Bulk spawning is the best though.

Nolan if your a total newbie you should do cakes first, you will get a respectable yield. you should enjoy every aspect of the growing experience

Ill just recommend that afoaf try one small case with his cakes if he is feeling confident enough after having read up on it while waiting through the incubation.  :nut:

All things being equal, casings will yield more mushrooms, but, more can go wrong with a casing than with a cake. If this is your first time, get some experience with cakes first.

Do whatever, just follow the respective tek to the T. If you want more and more potent, go with cased manure (for instance).

get experienced with cakes and dunking first. Play around with the casings a little bit until you get the hang of it. Casings do yeild more but experience, practice, and research play key factors. One tip sterilize whatever you put on a casing! I promise it will last longer. And whenever you think its spent or finished stick it under a tree if you live in a humid area.good luck:)

Like so many suggested do cakes first, and then casing.
I like casing because it makes the shroomies grow straight, and because I find it easier to maintain plus bigger yields.
When you start, you go crazy with hydrometers, humidifiers etc.
I keep it very simple just a spray bottle
My casing is 1/2 vermiculite 1/2 peat, I add 1 cup of worm casings.
(I have a worm been for my veggie garden) and some lime.
The secret is to sterilize everything even the water that you use to spray.
Pressure cooker is most useful, and patience.
PD give some love to the shroomies and you will be rewarded.
:heartpump:

Just remember that those pics you've seen with huge mushies sticking out of a gigantic casing aren't often done by newbies. Big assed casings require deep substrates (i.e. more than 2 or 3 jars worth of colonized substrate) and a contam problem will ruin more cakes in a casing than it would if they were fruited as cakes. Just like the rest of life, if you want to go big, be prepared to lose big a few times, and DO NOT get disappointed. It'll eventually work.

You know, I thought about invitro, but it's just so ... aesthetically unappealing.
