Why is it people get so hung up on words like captialism and communism?
It seems to stop people really seeing what a fucking mess we are actually in.
Once you've chosen it becomes a part of you? Defend and ignore becomes second nature because you are defending and ignoring yourself?

I agree. Defending buzz words makes very little sense. Attacking buzz words makes even less sense. It's more productive to criticize specific policies by suggesting alternative policies and explain, with as much detail as necessary, exactly why the effects of these policies will be better than the effects of those other policies.

Off-hand, I'd say it's because it provides a valuable frame of reference for us mere mortals.

here's how language works. a word is a symbol for something. words mean something. they aren't "just words".
it's not as though we're getting "hung up" over gebbushebulken and dalshtunkengabbel.
Once you've chosen it becomes a part of you? Defend and ignore becomes second nature because you are defending and ignoring yourself?
yep, i think there are many folks here guilty of that. mostly our young liberals. feels to me like some of them make their politics the way they like it because it's part of their self-image. it's hip to be a liberal and being some kind of socialist seems chic and rebellious. there's the added bonus of feeling like you're part of some elite group who knows and understands something that other people don't, or at least has a more elevated level of compassion than those bastard capitalists. but it's all a bunch of bullshit ego fodder that blinds them to logic and keeps them from recognizing when their positions are flawed. we wouldn't want their precious, so carefully constructed self-images as young socialists, anarchists, and wanna-be rebels to be eroded would we? after all, it's fun to feel like an underdog type who has the answers to the worlds problems, which would easily be solved if not for those greedy, fascist, capitalist pigs, plus christians, gun-owners, and suburbanites.

Well, you do have to admit, greedy, fascist, capitalist pigs, and fundamenalist 'Christians' who never seemed to grasp the really important bits are responsible for a lot of what's wrong in the world. *grin*

Unless what you view as hip and chic is also wise and mature; then it's wise and mature to hold on to what you view as hip and chic even though generally it's wise and mature to cast it aside. Spotting out the wise and mature in the hip and chic, now there's the trick...

Hey, if you're going to lay blame for what's going wrong with the world, you need to include everyone. What about the Muslim suicide bombers who kill innocent women and children? What about the Buddhist monks in South Eastern Asia who drive around in a Lexus while poor people sit by the road begging for scraps? Every faction of people has an element that does things most people consider "bad". There is no perfect human organization simply because it is made up of imperfect humans. The Bible's 2 main commandments are this: 1) Love God 2) Love your neighbor as yourself. Is any part of that evil? No, the evil lies in the people who call themselves Christians, but aren't. The people you bitch about are the ones who go to church simply to show off their clothes. See, I do not attend church (been kicked out of 6 or 7) or stand on street corners telling people their going to hell, yet I consider myself Christian. You can get just as close to God walking thorugh the woods on a warm summer day eating mushies than you can sitting in church in my opinion.
