I've never met one who wasn't a know-it-all.
Discuss.

I agree, one time there was two engineers argueiing about a topic that they thought they knew about, if I would have cared I could have googled it and given them the correct answer in 30 seconds instead of them fighting about it for 15 minuets, it was something about lighting...led being the most efficient or something. I just loled

No, just a general observation.

i don't think LED being more efficient has much room for argument, i clearly is the most efficient.

As SurReality said, I only know kids majoring in xxx form of engineering, and none of them are like that. In fact, almost all of my good friends at school are engineering majors and none of them are like that. In fact, they're all pretty down to earth people and smoke a shit ton of weed.

IME engineers do know a lot more than most people, on a variety of subjects.

I know a lot actually. I live with two atm and lived with three last semester. Also, one of my band mates is a professional engineer (medical engineering, I think). They weren't assholes they just all had the same annoying trait of always needing to get the last word on everything. I usually just agreed with them to save time.
I would be interested to hear some engineering perspectives as well so as not to bias this discussion. Don't be shy

I'm an engineer.
If I know something absolutely, I will argue it absolutely.
If I am somewhat uncertain, I will state my opinion, then also state my level of certainty, and I will back down if someone I trust has a more informed opinion.
If I am quite certain, but not positive, I will not take anyone's opinion as valid, no matter how sure they seem - I will look it up myself. I don't like spreading incorrect knowledge.

Engineers think about things differently. They actually like to sit around figuring things out. People who engineer, fix or build have a lot of respect from me. I think they deserve any know it all attitude they have as long as they can back it up.

You can't generalize one gigantic group of people based upon your very limited experiences.

How do you know his experience is very limited? And then, when does his experience become enough to warrant generalization?

Take pris for example. He has the mind of an engineer, fixer and builder. Mad respects to him for that. He does have a know it all attitude...and rightfully so...but sometimes he pisses people off about other things.
Arrogant yes...but rightfully so. In most situations. Yep.

I know because he's a human so his lifespan is about 100 years. I'm doubting that he's that old but even if he is it's definitely true that hasn't interacted with all engineers, in all situations, that have ever lived or even a significant percentage of all engineers that are alive right now. It is in fact likely that all the interactions he has had with engineers are situationally based and aren't revealing each engineer's personal attributes that will always hold true. The engineers he thinks are arrogant are likely just seeming that way to him due to the situation that the interaction took place in. (Look up the fundamental attribution error if you're interested in this phenomenon that I'm referencing.)
Human experience will never become enough to warrant generalization, the experience one can garner in one lifetime is not enough to create generalizations that will always hold true. (Generalizations which are based upon experience rather than empirical evidence for the sake of what I'm saying here.) There's really no point in generalizing groups of people because there is so much variability in individuals. That was my point.

Point taken, and rejected. What a ridiculous stance to take. There are plenty of reasons to generalize. We do it all the time and for good reason, it's useful.
