And so it begins..
    #1689356 - 07/06/03 01:19 AM (20 years, 8 months ago)

I've had the supplies a while and never felt the urge to actually get down and do it. However, after getting some shrooms for the 4th and watching the fireworks, I decided it's time. A quick trip to Walmart for 1/2 pints instead of the 1 pint jars I had, a few minutes of preperation and now some boiling, it's about to begin!

I've prepared the jars using the PF tek method, with some pretty coarse vermiculite (all I could find), whole wheat flower and jugged drinking water. I'm now boiling four tin foil covered jars as we speak. I'm nervous that I didn't do something right or that water will get in them while they're boiling. How do I ease my mind? How picky are shrooms when it comes to growing? The PF tek directions make it out to be a "Do this or else failure will result" kinda thing. Is that true when it comes to jar preperation? As long as I followed the directions so far, will it be alright?

Thanks for the help!

Thanks =)

I stuck to the tek on everything other than the rye flour.. I just couldn't find it here. Hope that's okay.

What about boiling the jars? Anything I need to worry about there? Not boiling long enough or boiling too long?

Also, I'm curious as to what everyone does after the jars colonize... Should I go the rubbermaind route? If so, any directions on what to do there? I've read a few casing things, but I'm still confused.

If you dont boil long enough plain and simple its not sterilized. If you boil too long it gets dryed out and no growth will occur. For your first time stick to cakes. Or you can do 1 case. Good Luck!
BTW: What strain are you using?

B+, which brings me to another question. I left the strains in my car over the weekend and it did get pretty hot. Would this kill the spores or will they be okay since they're in water?

Might have killed them if it was 95 degrees and hotter. :frown:

Crap. It was in the high 90s outside so that plus the trapped car heat may have killed them.

I'll try them anyway since I'm only doing four jars right now.

That sucks though...

A locked car in high 90's can get to 120 degrees :frown:

If the spores were left in the car, should I even try to use them or is it safe to assume that they're dead?

If it's the latter, I'll just order some more. Any recommended strands or should I stick with the B+ I had? I've read that they're pretty easy to get up and growing and are strong against contaminants.

a suggestion = cambodians .. . they  colonize like a motha, really fast colonization and they like warmth. . . but they also produce a l,ot of heat . . take a look at hawkes eye, they have a sweet write up on em.  :mushroom2: :mushroom2: :mushroom2:

If you left them in the car for even 5 minutes in 90* heat the car's entrampment of heat (which like said can get over 100* easily) MOST DEFINETLY killed them....but you never know...it doesn't hurt to try.

Good Luck

The reason babies die in locked cars with the windows down is because after 20 mins the temperatures excede 140F. Causing internal organ damage.. so yep those spores are most probably dead, but try it anyhow... not like the jars will explode and eat u if it doesn't work...

Try them, but don't expect too much.  If you don't see any myc growing after a week, get new spores.

I've found that they really aren't -that- picky, at least not in the incubation stage.  If things are mostly right, it'll work.  I mean, these things grow in the wild, where there're animals and stuff, and the temperatures fluctuate between the mid-90s and 70s.

Well, I've noticed a little bit a fuzz on two jars. Nothing to be overly excited about. The other two jars are not doing anything at all.

One question, I've read that some people don't harvest, they just eat the cakes. A) Why? B) Doesn't this taste *horrible*? C) Why?
