Cake tips?
    #1688952 - 07/05/03 09:47 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

When I'm making the PF-Tek cake substrate in 250ml (half-pint) canning jars, what is a good formula that members here have found to use? I read PF-Tek for simple minds, original PF-tek and PF-tek updated formula, which one do you people think I should go with, it's confusing! (Mix of BRF + Vermiculite + Water)

Also, after I pressure cook the jars, how long can they last sterile? Can I just pressure cook a batch and have them waiting ready for innoculation? Or should I cook them a couple of days before innoculation only?

you can also cover the hole with aluminum TAPE. and when they cool down they will create a suction making them keep for months with no water loss

I have access to a pond, should I use this water for the mix? I read that it could be better, the pond water will be sterilized when PC'd (Am I correct?)

I think the thought behind that is there are some microorganisms that help out the mycelium. But i dont know. I guess it makes me think about casing.

Someone mentioned pond water, would rain water be a good choice also? Seeing as that's they water they get in the wild...

Not quite.  There -used- to be all sorts of microoganisms -- and then you kill them all while PCing and the mushrooms have a very happy time feeding on their nutritious corpses.
