Measurements.....correct?
    #1686542 - 07/04/03 01:49 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

I just went to FungiFun.com and looked up the measurements for the substrate mix...tell me if I got my math right (I suck at math really bad)

FungiFun Ingredients for one 1/2 Pint Jar
Vermiculite: 140ml
Brown Rice Flour: 40ml

If doing tweleve 1/2 pint jars..
Vermiculite: 1680ml
Brown Rice Flour: 480ml

That being said...

If 1/4 Cup = 60ml

Then 1680ml divided by 60ml = 28 (1/4 cups) which equals 7 Cups of Vermiculite

Then 480ml divided by 60ml = 8 (1/4 cups) which equals 2 Cups of Brown Rice Flour

So the final recepie is:
7 Cups Vermiculite
2 Cups Brown Rice Flour

I apologize if I just made an ass out of myself...I fucking hate numbers.

6 cups Vermiculite
3 cups Brown Rice Flour
3 cups water

That is just enough to fill a dozen half pint jars. Don't forget to top them with dry vermiculite before pressure cooking.

^^
I already have that one....it makes the substrate too dry, at least if your storing them for later use.

Here's a tip for you then.

Go to your local home improvement store. Find the air conditioning supplies and buy yourself a roll of aluminum tape.

Mix your substrate and pressure cook as usual.

While your jars are still hot, make sure the lids are on tight and place aluminum tape over the holes.

As they cool, they will create a vacuum inside the jars. If your seal holds well and your sterilization went well, the jars will last indefinately. Moisture and sterility will remain unaffected.

If you have not used a filter disk ,be sure to remove the tape in a clean work area. As the tape is removed, the vacuum becomes neutral and sucks air into the jars.

play with your mix untill you get it perfect
no one really knows what your perfect mix is unless they are using the exact same ingrediants as you(not likley)
in other words mix your batch and then feel a little with your bare hands.
it should be as moist as you can get it without being wet .if you can understand that then you will be making perfect batches every time in no time  :mushroom2: :mushroom2: :mushroom2: :mushroom2: :mushroom2: :mushroom2: :mushroom2: :mushroom2: :mushroom2: :mushroom2: :mushroom2:
