Please help a beginner
    #1688011 - 07/05/03 02:52 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Alright. My name is Leigh and I live in a rural area right outside of Memphis TN. I own horses and therefore I have a large manure pile in a shaded area. I've been looking around after rain and such and I've found a few different species of mushrooms... but none of them blue when I touch them! I don't understand why I can't find any active mushrooms... the pile seems like a perfect place to grow... am I overlooking anything? do all active mushrooms blue at the touch? How much moisture is needed to cause them to grow? When is the best time to hunt? Please help me! Thanks.

You could start by looking at the FAQ's. or try the search. after rains is a good time to go look for shrooms. The active mushroom spores have to be around your area or carried by a storm or gradually make there way to your pile. THey cant just come out of no where... right? im not the biggest mushroom hunter here by any means. but if you find anything look up at the top at the stickies, they will help you post the information you need to have the Great guys respond and help get your mushies identified. Be sure to post the specification or no one can help you. YOu can check on spore printing methods to start helping some of the first signs of an active species. Not ALL active species bruise blue.... from my understanding. there may be a few that dont, but again you will need to ask the more experienced gentlemen in the forum. Dont ingest anything you dont know what it is! be carefull...!

Let me welcome you to the shroomery! :ooo:     :eyemouth:

First of all, the majority of mushrooms, including those that grow on dung, aren't active. So just finding the right habitat isn't the end of the search.

Not all active mushrooms blue when bruised. Most do, but there are several that don't.

If some mushrooms are coming up, then there's probably enough moisture, and the temerature's probably OK.

The best time to hunt is any time. If you want to find mushrooms, you have to go out and look. The more you look, the more mushrooms you'll find.

Now go read the FAQs. There's a lot of information there for beginners.

Happy mushrooming!

Thank you so much for the replies... I've helped in growing indoor mushrooms before and the results were pretty successful... at least more successful than my hunting has been lately. I've been searching different piles for a while, and I've even looked in a few cow pastures around the area... I guess it just takes time. Thanks again for all the help and I hope to have better luck in the future.

Well, being in TN and having access to horse dung, your going to be looking for Panaeolus subbalteatus. It rarely ever bruises blue, so the species your after is one of the few actives that don't commonly stain blue when injured. If you find something growing from horse dung that looks like the picture I am about to post, and drops a black spore print, then it is likely Panaeolus subbalteatus. This is a hard genus to learn how to seperate the different species that belong to it, always take a spore print and be sure its jet black.

You could also use that dung with Moe's Outdoor Tek....with having grown mushrooms indoors, the process should be really easy. With a decent sized area, you can produce a lot of shrooms!!

Subbs will most often blue at that base of the stem where the mycellium is attached, be careful doing this though, as it can damage the mycellium.

Yeah, I forgot to add that tid bit of info. Most Panaeolus subbalteaus will not stain blue at all, the ones that do stain blue will show this color only on the white mycelium at the base of the stem, not actually on the stem itself.
I got a few pics of what it looks like here somehwhere........

"large manure pile"

Well dont just look there, in fact MOST mushrooms DONT grow on shit , stick to the grasslands and the forest I say, although we live in VERY different areas , look for shrooms on sod grass later this year , new apartments , little companys, etc etc will have this shit outside and its a hotbed for shroomies!

I have picked stunzii, beaocystis , scriptipes, animita muscaria, all of SOD or some regular lawn , your shrooms will be different but look on the grass

Um... he's in TN, remember? They don't have stunzii and baeos there.

In TN looking in the grass would be a waste of time.

Look in horse manure and grass clipping compost piles. Thats the only place Pan subbs grow.
