Another clueless beginner requesting assistance please

Heres a pretty picture:
I found these on the northern side (more shade) near a cherry tree, growing in the grass. The area is northwest British Columbia in Canada. The caps are about 2cm diameter and the stems average around 5cm each. I don't have very much experience with identification but took a spore print of one of them, the spores were dark brown in colour, I took the print on aluminum foil though and stuck some tape over the top to keep them and find it's difficult to get a picture of it. Anyone have any ideas for further identification? I've been looking over various descriptions and I am having difficulty, I think they may just be a fairly average common mushroom, but I'd like to identify them regardles, thanks in advance

From the references on erowid I do believe they are a Panaeolus variety, let me try and complete this post a. Habitat - shaded grass area on slight incline on the northern side of under a cherry tree b. Characteristics of the gills - Brown gills not attached to the stem c. Measurements of cap and stem. Cap~~2cm, Stem~~5cm d. Characteristics of the stem - Thin and smooth stem which is hollow, the colouring is brownish to white. e. Characteristics of the cap - Conical cap with a small 'nipple' at the top, smooth with brown located near the nipple and white on the rest of the cap f. Spore print color - dark brown spores g. Color that the mushroom briuses - Stem has since bruised a brownish colour h. Scent of mushroom - I have a terrible sense of smell, so I do not notice a distinct odour I am unsure of which variant of the Panaeolus species they are though, these mushrooms are a white colour and the Panaeolina foenisecii that I have seen in pictures and the one I spore printed before were much browner. The appear to be a Panaeolus subbalteatus but as I have no experience with this I can not confirm. If I had a more powerful microscope I could check out the spores but I do not. Does anyone know any other differences I could look for between the two? sorry for not reading the top posting first.

My print turned out really badly, I don't think I'll keep doing them on aluminum anymore cause it's hard for me to view them. I'll just stick with paper like I had tried originally. Do you think it's too late to try another print on a different medium, can you only do prints off freshly picked mushrooms? edit: I now think I can confirm these as definately Panaeolina foenisecii, thank you for your help identifying these common mushrooms, Mr. Mushrooms!

I found some more around the same area and got a decent spore print from one of the caps, the thing is these look quite a bit different than the original ones I found, I know Panaeolus subbalteatus and Panaeolina foenisecii look very similar to each other, I am assuming the only way to tell between them is by examining the spores. I think I'd describe the spores from this print as a dark brown, and subbalteatus would have 'jet black' spores. Just wondering if you think these are Panaeolina foenisecii also, the only thing that really makes them seem different to me is that this batch seem to have a "ring around the cap" and the other batch I picked had a more brownish area around the nipple
What sort of conditions can effect the way a mushroom looks?

Enough different things to write a book on.
The coloring condition you're seeing is referred to in mycology as the mushroom cap being hygrophanous. That means that it changes color as it dries out. As you might guess, different areas of the cap dry out at different rates, so hygrophanous mushrooms often show that sort of banding effect.
Another effect which would be pretty significant is sunlight. Most mushrooms become lighter colored as the sun shines on them, although I've seen a few that seem to become darker. So you can get a fair amount of variation in the appearance of different specimens depending on how much sun or shade they get.
Of course, genetics can play a pretty significant role, too.
Happy mushrooming!

They don't bruise blue, they must be foenisecii, just because the print is more brownish than black, I left them drying and now they look exactly like the first ones I picked, more white-ish as in the first picture. Thats the problem with digital pictures is that every computers colour calibration will be a bit different unless they are all calibrated the same, so the spore print on my monitor looks a lot more brown edit: Also, what are the difference between Panaeolina and Panaeolus foenisecii ?

I have no doubts that they are Panaeolus fonisecii.
Nice find though

There is no difference. They are different names for the same mushroom. Panaeolina is a genus used by some mycologists who have separated out those species from Panaeolus on the basis that their spores aren't smooth - they have tiny warts on the surface.
You may also find the name Psathyrella foenisecii, which is yet another synonym for this exact same mushroom. It was placed there by Alexander H Smith when he wrote his monograph on Psathyrella, and he gave a number of good reasons for putting it there. In general, the population of mycologists hasn't accepted that move.
Most references list it as Panaeolus foenisecii, but it probably mostly depends on who taught the person doing the naming and what references they use.

ToxicMan, you're explainations are simply amazing. I have learned so much from you, and its such a pleasure to have you're intellect here on the boards.
Seems like you know just as much as a professional mycologist.

Found some more, growing in the same general area, except we just had a cold rain for about a week and the sun came out today, mushrooms were fruiting EVERYWHERE! These ones attracted my attention because of the wavy caps, the spore print came out brown This mushroom caught my attention, so it was selected for a photosession, it reminds me of a Pan. Foe, but it had white-ish gills, and the stem was very strong and thicker than the foes that grow around the tree, the cap had a more pronounced nipple on it. I took a spore print and thought that nothing happened, but on closer look it appears it dropped white spores edit: on that last picture, is the white on the stem from being dusted by spores? Please view full pictures, they are nice and hi-res

Cool, I hope it dropped a lot of spores and I get the mycellium growing by my tree in a 'fairy ring', any ideas on the first one?
