so far... some questions...
    #1687030 - 07/04/03 09:25 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

some guy i know is working on a mushroom grow (it's his first ever bulk grow) and he asked if i'd come here and ask a few questions for him...

he started out with 2 quart jars of fully colonized birdseed to use as spawn. yesterday, he collected some nice aged horse dung and pasteurized it at 160 degrees for an hour. today, that poo was spawned into trays with the birdseed. he has a few questions at this point:

1. the spawn grains, after they were taken out of the jars and mashed into the poo, lost their white look and just sorta looked like uncolonized grain for the most part. alot of them anyway. the grain had been fully and completely colonized. is it normal for masses of colonized grain to look not as... colonized.. when they're actually broken down into individual kernels?

2. the poo is layered into 2 seperate trays. each is about 3 inches deep with poo and contains a quart of birdseed spawn. the containers are about 14 inches X 14 inches. about how long should colonization take and about how much (ballpark figure) weight in mushrooms can be expected after casing and fruiting?

3. for humidity, he'll be keeping the casings in a terrarium with some wet perlite in the bottom. this should keep the humidity very high, which is great for pinning, but he's heard it should be a little lower for the actual mushroom growing... is this really much of a problem?

thanks!

Thats fine. They loose alot othe solid whiteness when you shake them and break apart the solid outer network.

14 days or so ,depends on the amount colonized (weight) and subtrate depth as well as other factors.  A lot

As long as the surface of the casing layer doesn't turn into a wet, muddy mess, he should be ok. good luck and keep us posted
