Spawning to monotubs/sandbags w/ sealed holes vs open/polyfil holes

A few months back, I got a bad case of trich.... I've ALWAYS spawned my grain to straight coir, and cut the polyfil holes in my sandbags/ left the holes in my MSG/Monotub open, from day one. Effectively never "switching" to fruiting conditions, but spawning directly to it. This has NEVER failed me..... Until last time. I'm suspecting I had my coir way too wet this time, so it wasn't 100% colonized, leaving an opening for trich. Wasted a LOT of time and materials because of lazy, and not getting the moisture content right. I still kick myself. But I digress.
So I came here, and the general consensus seemed to be I should be spawning to sealed tubs. (Not completely airtight) After consolidation, then introduce fruiting conditions by opening the holes, or cutting them at that time.
I did that this time. And I got another failure... This time it smelled like sour apples. A bad case of Bacteria.
I feel like leaving the holes closed was the cause of the bacteria.
So which is it!?
I got 3 spawn bags left. I'm spawning it to straight coir. What does the community think I should do? I'm just looking for some opinions...
Spawn it to sealed bags/tubs again? Did I make a mistake?
Or do it the way I've always done it, and make sure the moisture content is right, and hope for the best?

If it contamed after you spawned to bulk substrate, then it's your spawn. Keep your tubs/bags sealed (allowing for GE) during colonization & consolidation. I tape the holes in my tubs & use the lid for GE. You want 10k-20k ppm CO2 during colonization.
Lastly, don't spawn to straight coir. Add some verm in there for nutrients & moisture retention.

I got no verm.... gotta work with what I have... but it couldn't be my spawn... could it? it had pins all over the surface of the bag... it was about 3 days or so, in a gusseted poly bag, with a loose rubber band keeping the top closed.

It's probably the spawn.
If you're just using polyfil as your GE filter, make sure it's extremely tight. But, also, make sure not to pinch the opening of your bag too tightly w/ the rubber band, thus stopping all GE.

I think the rubber band was maybe tighter than it should be. Not airtight by any means, but maybe enough to choke it... You think good spawn, under these conditions, could produce such a pungent smell in only 3 days?

No, not good spawn.
I've had bulk substrate go bad due to lack of GE. I closed them air tight in a trash bag then came back 3 days later & they were all bad, due to no GE.

..Verm anit gots no nutes. whatchu talkinbout TL.
OP, Are you still fruiting in the same room your trich bomb went off in? Is it carpeted? Did you clean it really really well? How did you dispose of the contaminated substrate? Did you carry it through your house without wetting it down first? Those are my 'lessons learned' anyways.

I cleaned it as best I could. Vaccuumed, wiped down all surfaces. I disposed of it by pouring bleach over the green spots, and then bagging it up outside my door, and throwing it in the trash outside....
So good spawn, in 3 days can smell like sour ass crack... so I have hope for the 3 spawn bags I have left... I could swear they were all fine...

It contains minerals. Minerals are a nutrient source for mushrooms. Why do you think your casing layer on BRF cakes gets colonized by the cake once put in the SGFC?

ja i guess you're right.. PF says It's ACTS like a non nutrient barrier, just acts tho not for real real.
And i've only fruited off cakes once, they were left naked.
I'll only use cakes for testing cultures until i get a flowhood

Having never prepared grain myself i cant help anymore still wrong topic.. pothead
you did the clean up right tho for sure.
I know how ya feel tho, thinking your doing everything right and the fail.. frekin sux. I'm at a 58 percent success rate on pre-sterlized bags. I know what i did wrong tho and I'll adapt.
So your bags are self-made? wrong topic
