Fly Fishing & Tying 3

I wanted to create a thread for all those Shroomery members who are active fly fishermen/women. A place to talk about gear, fly patterns, biology, reading water, and of course a place to share pictures of recent catches.
I started my fly fishing journey around 4 months ago and have spent way to much money and time in a short period. I am already tying my own flies, constantly planning adventures and trips to local river systems, and reading every fly fishing book and magazine I can get my hands on. Here are some pictures of my tying desk and its evolution...this happened only over the three months that I have been tying:
It Starts:

The Obsession grows:

Full Blown Addiction:

I will post a few patterns I have tied to this thread at a later time, for now I am curious who else out in Shroomery land has been hooked by the fly fishing bug?

Been tying since 5th grade. My room became heaps of hackles and skins. Kept getting hooks stuck in my feet. Got to a point where I tied all the flies I needed for a decade. Now I just do a couple dozen up before a trip. Also tamed the mess and Got it all in a traveling case. Funny how hackles went up when girls started using them in their hair.

i personally don't usually use a fly rod unless im wading. but i do enjoy tying my own flies.
here is some advice on how to best catch your fish though. i have a tacklebox with all different types of simple bait with different colors. most all types of fish will like the same shiny parts, or the same jigglers or spinners however color preference changes from water system to water system. but the color preference can change. Here's how i go about figuring it out.
so if you find a good spot. my best advice would be to try a few different types of flies. see what you get some hits on. because diff shapes and textures also play a roll. after you find that, figure out which color they like. (i always take my fly tying box with me when i go on trips) then after you find out those two things, make a fly or two that fits the situation on the spot.
my setup that i typically use for trout fishing is:
ultra lite casting rods (1/250th of an oz - 30/250ths of an oz) because these are light, portable, and they can get those really light weight things out where you need them (you might like fly rods better but i just have good aim with the more traditional type)
i also have several ultra light spinner reels, and a few light bait caster reels. i like these because you can easily aim your cast with your rod and stop'n'drop the bait where it needs to go.
i typically use 2-6lb test fluorocarbon fishing line. it is more expensive but i typically fish for trout in spring fed spring systems so you need stealth. and fluorocarbon has the same light refraction as water so it turns invisible under water.
in the way of bait i like to use flies and you always have to try diff reeling speeds and jerks because it takes JUST the right one for them to hit it. otherwise they'll just look the other way. so find what works for you! the colors i have found to work well are white, yellow, orange and light greenish/brown.
if i'm feeling lazy ill travel up to the power bait section and put a split shot weight 2-4 ft up the line from a size 10-12 short hook with a powerbait ball on it (the reason for the hooks is you can completely conceal the hook inside the power bait, but you must position it so that the sharp tip of the hook is BARELY sticking out for it to be effective) then you just cast out to a good spot where you feel fish would hide. make sure the power bait is floating in the middle to bottom of the stream and wait for a fish to swallow it.
~~~IMPORTANT~~~ only use the above method if you intend to clean and eat the fish. because they will swallow it. and to get it out you either usually rip up their insides or stick the hook in them and snap the line. you will loose some hooks this way but you can get most of them back when you clean the fish just be sure to not let the stomach slip away from you! i have gotten many a nice fly for free and several of mine back from checking whats inside trouts stomachs :P
hope this helps some of you! take care
I shifted towards fly fishing from ultra light spin casting for pan fish and bass...I figured that it was time to start tossing even lighter imitations and see what happened. I did not really think much about fishing for trout or other species at the time...but after catching several hundred pan fish I got the hunger for catching new species. Some great information and tips gecko!
I am about to have a shower and then sit down at the tying bench to spin a few up...may post some pictures if I remember
I am an all or nothing kind of guy...can get expensive lol.
Right now I am trying to acquire a Red Fox pelt so I can keep tying foxee clousers...they are deadly for small mouth and have hooked into but not landed a few large browns with them...a pelt would allow me to tie thousands I would figure over the years.
Will hopefully have some time to tye this week, will share it with you all. Trout season closes in 7 days around my area...think I am going to call in sick to work for a day and get out on the water lol.
12-14" Brown caught on a size 16 griffiths gnat:
Caught on a size 16 scud nymphed through a foam line:
These fish below I caught using a size 16 freshwater shrimp (scud) fly I showed above. It was deadly for the little guys today, I stopped taking pictures after the first few but hooked into 7-8 within 10 minutes:
I downsized today to a 5X leader and 6X tippet (2.6lb test). The difference was HUGE to say the least. I was hooking into a lot more fish, had an easier time getting a natural drift and it appeared to increase the amount of fish that took an interest in my fly. I have been trying to focus on presentation more and more...and after today I feel like I am finally getting some techniques and methods down...it was a blast. The first fish of the day was the larger brown on a size 16 griffiths gnat. I watched it rise, take the fly and dart back into the depths. As it turned its head I set the hook. It was a good little fight and such a beautiful fish. I had a blast today and look forward to at least one more before the season ends.
That sounds like a great time mojo. I have just started looking into the different fly fishing seminars and events. I am going to a HUGE event in the coming weeks..its an all weekend event and should be lots of fun...hope to get a wicked prize from the raffle they are holding.
I also signed up for an upcoming fishing clinic...reasonably priced, get to learn lots about steelhead and then head out onto the water with the instructor to actually catch some steelhead.
It is an obsession that has hooked me as deep as growing edible and medicinal mushrooms... I have a feeling it is only going to get worse lol. If you ever want to swap patterns, fly tying materials or finished flies let me know brother.
P.S what are you getting into fishing for this fall?
Yeah its really frustrating you can see HUGE fish jumping in you face and your smacking them on the nose with everything in your box cast after cast. but then that one perfect cast BAM you fucking reels screaming! I really feel like the only reason the bite is you pissed them off enough. Of course once you hook it its really a coin flip if you'll land him. Especially with barbless hooks and whatnot. Slack the line for a second and one head shake and hes off. They jump too and your usually landing a huge fish on angel hair line. But landing one has to be one of the best experiences angling has to offer. Of course alotta days I'm just happy to get a hook up. It's really hit or miss some days they bite like crazy otherdays they're really tight lipped. Weather I think plays a huge part along with fly size and color but like I said somedays...
listen to everything the guide says man they no the fish prob better than the fish. They have learned from many many hours of experience.
Nice flys too I can tell your honing the craft.
Glad to see a familiar face, and even more glad to hear of a common obsession....I mean interest;-)
Sounds like a good time out in the wilderness camping and fishing...my kind of party minus the mind altering substances, but to each their own;-)
Do you tie your own flies brother?
I have pondered the idea of trying to get a Shroomery Fly Swap together...3-10 people...however many are interested get together, agree on a certain class or style of fly be it dry, wet, nymph, streamer, caddis, etc. and tie up the same number of flies as their are members of the swap. Then all members send the entries to the swap master and he takes one of each, repackages them and ships them on to each member. I think its a great idea and gets the creative juices flowing..if anyone is interested let me know and we can see if its worth doing.
Well, when I first started fly fishing I got my feet wet ( har har )a little with tying. But I have so many hobbies, and so little time. I own a business, I have a 9 year old daughter, softball, snowboarding, golf, motorcycle, music... I just only have so much room in my life for time consuming hobbies. These days though, I am sort of getting the tying bug back a little bit. I would definitely be interested in a swap if I ever get my ass into gear and start tying again. I need a bigger house, with a big man cave where I can close my god dam door.. lol
I understand totally...I have the same issues minus the daughter...for now at least lol.
Between my crazy work hours, my small business, family, and other oddball hobbies it can be hard to find time to fish yet alone tie flies to fish. I have throttled back with growing edible and medicinal mushrooms to take on learning about fly fishing and tying...I go through tunnel vision obsessions for years at a time...and can at times neglect other responsibilities and whatnot in order to be able to partake in the hobby or current obsession...I am only human I suppose lol.
If you ever get around to tying, need some materials to get back in the game, or just want a few flies to fish let me know...would love an excuse to tie a few more flies, and seeing others catch fish on them is just as thrilling as catching them myself.
