I tried fly fishing once, but it was such a hassle, I pretty much slay trout everywhere I go with my spinning rod and a panther martin spinner

It's work but there are great rewards for those who put in the required time and effort.  I don't anymore.  I'll go with a yellow body panther martin with a black tail with a little red in it.  It's the most effective spinner I've ever used.  The body shape and weight casts far and sinks deep.

I have spent countless hours researching these beautiful fish, how to catch them, their biology, habits and history...you name it I would read it to try and get a better grasp on what I was up against. I even went as far as to enroll in a Steelhead clinic to try and learn any tips and tricks that I could to land my first steel beauty.

After coming back from seven trips empty handed I choose to head to a river that feeds a great lake I have yet to fish this year. I showed up at the bridge at around 8:15am and was shocked to see 20+ cars parked on the side of the road. As I parked and got setup I noticed 2-4 people exiting a few of the cars...I estimate that there was easily 40-60+ people fishing up this stretch of the river this morning.

I tied on a fly a friend of mine had given me to start off my trip. It was a black salmon hook, a bit of purple and blue flash, bluejay hackle, and some jungle cock eyes. I worked my way upstream from the bridge seeing as most of the float fisherman were sitting downstream and started into the groove of swinging flies. I worked my way up to the bottom of the first pool and started working the far side as I could see a few seams, changes of current and a bit deeper water. I worked this pool up the side for around 45 minutes at which point I switched over to a mcflyfoam egg and started wading further upstream. I was tossing in big mends to try and get my egg down to the bottom but I was not having all that much luck. I spent another 45 minutes or so wading up to the bottom of the next pool and started working a nice section again on the far side of the bank with some nice seams and deeper water.

At this time I watched a few float guys walk up to the start of the last pool I had fished. The first cast one of them had on a nice fish and I started to ask myself why can he pick a fish out of a run that I just went through without any luck. My first train of thought went to getting my fly down to where the fish are holding. I took off my intermediate leader and exchanged it for a 10' fast sinking rio leader. To this I tied on about 3 feet of 12 pound test tippet material and then tied on another egg and started working back through my current run. This started to get my egg down into where I figured the fish were holding so that was a good start.

Around this time the float fishermen below me walked back into the woods looking for other waters to fish and I figured I would wait a while and then wade down and try the pool again. I figured that there had to be a reason the fish he had caught was holding in that pool, and perhaps another fish would take up the cover or feature if I waited a bit. I was not feeling confident with the egg at this point so I tied on my confidence fly. A size 6 Foxee Clouser tied with red flash in the tail and a red dumbbell eye. I waded down and started to work the pool from a logjam right at the start of the run. I would toss my fly straight across the pool and allow it to swing through with the current. I worked my way down and right at the tail of the pool my swinging fly was struck hard. I set the hook and was into what felt like a good sized fish.

Excitement welled up inside of me and I started to pay very close attention to what I was doing. I let the fish run a bit while keeping tension on her and started my first dance with the chrome beauty that had haunted my dreams. I would let her run and then bring in the slack and try to direct her into shallower water so I could net her. Each time she would come into shallower water panic would strike and she would make another run for the pool. We sat and played this back and forth game for several minutes until the fight in her started to wind down. At around the three minute mark I was able to coax her into shallower water, wet my net and finally land her safely...my chest swelled as I stared in awe at the beauty of my prey. I grabbed my camera that is always at the ready in my wader pocket and snapped a quick picture while she was still

I then gently positioned my hemostats to remove the foxee clouser from the inside of her mouth. I gently placed her in the shallower water beside my rod for one more quick picture...the quality of both pictures are not all that great, they were very quick and hurried as I wanted to return this beauty back to the river system as quickly as possible unharmed.

After the picture I grabber her by the tail, positioned her into slower moving current on the sides of the river and waited for her to recover. Once I felt her strength return I let go and watched as she briskly swam downstream.

I stood in wonder, my heart pounding as I basked in the experience of what just transpired seconds before. I had achieved my goal. I thought back on my previous trip...the 7th outing in a row spanning 2 months. Not a single hit, a single whiff of the presence of fish, or an ounce of luck. Even at that moment I still had the want and drive to continue forward towards my goal of landing a chrome beauty...and as I stood triumphant in the brisk November air I was glad that I never faltered or let doubt creep into my mind.

Side Note: For those interested in size and weight, length was 21-22", which would put this fish at around the 3.5-4lb mark from what I can tell.

Awesome catch  Glad to see your efforts paying off, it does take putting in time. Even just watching the river and fish swim by or watching others do their thing.

I too just returned home a little early this evening due to circumstances. it was turning out to be the best days fly fishing  I've ever had. Left yesterday afternoon to stop and make some casts or a run or two in Del Loma on the Trinity river. Caught a small native hen swinging a Brown rubber legs at sunset. Had dinner, slept in the car on a gravel bar as the campground was already closed for the season. Woke up @ 6 to hike in and fish said campground, only to show up to a crowd on a thin, clear river. Didn't get the best of spots, not too many fish moving like last week, did see a black bear on the opposite bank taking a drink, Didn't stick around to long there.

Moving down river towards Junction city brought on too much drift boat traffic, though I did land a strange looking maybe hybred brown trout steelhead?  Finally right after noon i made my way down to pigeon point, probly where I should have started this morinng anyway. I had the whole run to my self, here, and this so happens to be where all of the fish seem to be holding! At this point I was swinging a #6 black herniator and with in the hour was well worn from three  steelies. The first one I got barely qualified for an adult ,but spent more time in the air as it did water. I wanted to break for lunch but they kept biting for several successive cast. Then I made myself stop for lunch and left to go fetch water & eat & whatnot.

So i go back to the same run at pigeon point, which is now occupied by three more fly fisherman and their boat.  I get above them more just to watch and after a half hour they move on after not getting bit. I step in and on the first swing get bit and landed another nice hen. So I retired the herniator and tied on another rubber legs this one with a black tensile chenille head. First cast and swing ,gets bit and this fish just launches straight in the air, runs all over the place. 24 inch native buck around 6-7 pounder. Smooth release after an epic battle, only to snap my rod on the next cast..

Nothing says go home and be responsible on Monday morning like breaking a 500$ fly rod on Sunday afternoon..

Beautiful Fish - Congrats on your first steely :toast:

I cannot say that I am a fly fisherman, but I sure can appreciate fishing, being out on the river, and certainly landing a 'first'.  You didn't mention if you actually tied the fly that you caught him on, but that would have made it that much sweeter.  I'm also not sure what the size limits are but Im assuming that was a legal fish..  so I think the fact that you released it to fight another day is awesome and will bring you good fishing Karma.

I myself have hard earned my rights to my 'first'..for me the King.  Made many expensive trips to Manistee without a bounty.  Not knowing what the hell I was doing other than I had satisfy the urge to catch one.. reading, researching, spending money on tackle, etc.  It was a humbling experience.  Will never forget when I finally found the right combination and had a King screaming on the end of my reel.  Now I have it down pretty good...but I still get that 'search-search-search-search-FOUND IT!!!!' feeling just like my first.  It just never gets old...

Sorry for the late replies...I had my work vehicle robbed on Monday night and had $1200 worth of personal tools stolen from me...have not really been on the ball as of late.

Red: You are hardcore my friend, that is dedication for sure. I also could not imagine breaking
a high end rod...I am hoping I never know that feeling....have you thought about contacting
the manufacturer and asking about a replacement?

Iced: I am beyond obsessed...they will be holding an intervention soon lol.

Abbey: Thanks man, I did tie the fly that I caught that beauty on. It was a size 6 Foxee clouser, a nice crayfish/minnow imitation that has caught me all sorts of different species of fish.

I am sure next year I will be after the kings...I tend to target a species until I can hook
them consistently and then move onto something else for variety..my fly fishing venture started
for panfish...after catching 800-900+ this season as well as tons of small bass I made a decision
to move on to fishing for trout...steelhead...next year salmon will enter the mix I am sure lol.

just an idea:

how if i replace the hooks of a standard bait casting line for flyes? name it soft hackles, woolly buggers or nymphs.

not quite sure what you mean but if you wish to use flies on a bait casting rod you'll find the problem lies in the wieght. you can't throw a feather across a room it doesn't have the mass. Idk what you call them but what you need is a bobber but I find they spook trout with a loud splash

And when your drifting use as last little weight possible (while still giving enough to cast) to avoid snags.

I'd say the hackle is tied standard around the shank then bunched up and secured with dubbed x-wraps. I'm guessing, never saw that style hackle before, but I like it..

Edit: Yeap, that's how it works, just tied a sample of it myself. Use two hackles for size 12- 14, one for any smaller. I only used one on a size 12 for the test fly and the wing came out a little sparse..

Yes, make SURE to fill out any warranty info when making a purchase of this caliber. Most of the better fishing equipment manufacturers have killer warranty guarantees and quick turn-around times. I should be back in business by the middle of next week.

Hopefully..
