Yet another will-this-work thread!
    #1686666 - 07/04/03 03:26 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

He's never cased before, and he's kind of thinking out loud here, so please forgive him, kind sirs, if he's overlooking something crucial.

He is wondering why this would not be something to try:
-put a layer of moist jiffy mix on the bottom of the jar
-fill in with substrate (planning on popcorn, btw)
-put a layer of moist jiffy mix on the top of the jar
-pressure cook
-cool
-innoculate
-set aside, let colonize
-tape up the bottom and sides of jar to block light
-take lid off the top
-leave in jar, expose top to light, wait

His idea is that he would have the benefit of a casing layer without taking the cake out and breaking it up (or just dumping some out with grain). He is going for the ease and low contam risk of invitro, with open-air, top-only growing and moisture of a casing. It seems like people would do this if it worked, so what's the catch? Does the casing layer (top layer) have to be added after sterilization & colonization for some reason? Is one of the reasons casings do so well having something to do with the fact that you break the stuff up?

Thanks

An interesting idea. My friend can see a couple of possible problems with your plan.

One of the benefits of using whole grains instead of the PF tek is the ability to shake the jar in order to speed colonization. This is not possible with the casing already in the jar.

Many times the substrate colonizes at an uneven pace. The mycelium could easily grow through the substrate and casing in one part of the jar, while the rest of the jar remains uncolonized. This would make it difficult to achieve an even pinset.

If you decide to try this be sure to post a grow log. Shrooms to you for being innovative!

Good points. I guess he should forget about the bottom layer, and not add the casing layer until after colonization. So it will basically be a traditional casing but in the original jar.

With such a small area exposed to the air, would keeping a humidified chamber make much of a difference? Maybe he'll just inject em or something if they get too dry.

Unless you live in a very arid climate a humidified chamber should not be necessary. Keep the jar loosely covered and lightly mist each time you fan.
