Today was my first time hunting -  from around 10am til 1pm.  Out wandering round the fields at the foot of the local hills as heard a couple of years back through word of mouth they are a good spot.  Spotted a few mushrooms but none that appeared like potential liberty caps.  Did not check higher ground as fellow hunter had somewhere else to be but planning on heading up further into the hills next week.  The hills closest to where I stay have sheep roaming them all year round and habitat in general resembles a number of the pics posted by others so hopefully will find something within at least a couple more hunting trips.

This year I picked 50 libs on 01 January 2012, maybe the new weather changes mean the same amount of libs will appear as always but over a more protracted length of season which I guess makes it fairer for everyone to get a decent amount.

Got 30-40 today. I Have a usual spot. In 2007 i started in a field, then 2008 i came back and there was nothing there. So i walked down the valley and up the other side. in 2009 went back to both spots and found nothing. So i walked across the road and down to a stream. Came back here in 2010 and it was fine, but in 2011 had to change fields again. This year, i went back to the first spot by the field and there's nothing, so i walked about 500 metres up the moorside and found some.

Worried that either myself or others are disturbing the mycelium. I always take care not to trample, i always twist and don't pull and i try to flick and disperse as much as possible. I Have a "pick 2, leave 2" rule and only pick large ones or "aborts". Worried that either fungicide is being used or someone else is ruining the landscape.

Still early :\

Went hunting today, found a grand total of 2. At least I know season has started locally. Temperatures have been quite warm but it's only getting colder

Same place as the last decent haul...more this time though (the stack looks deceptively small as they're packed in) - all in about an hour again too

Now these are the pictures that I want to be seeing. If on each occasion that I walk away with a haul that size full of liberty caps, I'll certainly be a happy chappy! Once finally dried, those would no doubt last me quite some time.

Out of curiosity, can you tell me what type of land you've been picking on? Is it high altitude? What's the story? I've recently had to move into the city so I'm going to have to be venturing out that little bit further in search of those magical specimens!

Both of my last hauls were found at the same spot - which is basically a fairly sheltered public footpath on the moors. It's a get out of the car, cross the road, over the stile and eyes down immediately kind of job. There were sheep straight away too which is always a good sign.

As I mentioned in a previous post though, it's as much about being in the right place at the right time as much as anything else.

I saw something being sprayed over one of my favorite spots a couple of years ago, since then the spot seems to be sterile of Libs, but why would farmers bother spraying anyway? the fungus doesn't hurt us so surely its not going to hurt the farm animals.

To keep of trespassers? Because they have a negative stereotype of drugs?

I guess that spraying would most likely be to kill unwanted species or just to make the grass grow more.
I remember when I was much younger my local council (where I lived at the time)spraying an area of city centre park, to kill liberty caps, as there was a lot of picking going on there. The area was a large open space next to main roads. While at the time they were legal to consume fresh, it was considered a local social problem! That was back in the late 70s, I wonder if they've returned to that spot yet.
Of course people just moved on to pick in less visible places.

Thanks, I haven't had any time for mushroom hunting for a bit, I must get out for a walk today while I have the chance, I can't make up my mind where I want to go though...

Found them on a hill near Buxton, which is the highest market town in Buxton, so yes, altitude. ^^

I've never been mushroom hunting in Buxton as it's surrounded by so many other places perfect for libs and all sorts, the Goyt valley is nice and not too far from Buxton. Buxton is normally wet and cold at most times so it's great for mushrooms in theory...

Hi,

This tiny mushroom caught my eye whilst walking through a field known for it's libs. I wasn't out hunting, just walking my dog this morn when it caught my eye due to being dry hence light in color. I can't make up my mind whether or not it's a lib?

https://files.shroomery.org/files/12-38/788384586-IMG_1599.jpg][/url]

Here are some libs I found on the same field last year (my first season, I'm still a newbie)...

When comparing the photo's I think the stems on these are very similar to whatever I found this morning, however none of the libs from last year had black stripes on the cap as the first pics show.

I'd appreciate anyone's opinion? The pic quality is poor as only had my phone with me at the time :/ but any help would be great, thanks.

Thanks for pointing that out to me. After dropping 'coprinus' into Google images I agree it may be part of that family.

At least the temps are coming down nicely. Here is a West Mids forcast for Friday. From what I've learnt so far I assume these temps could kick start fruiting in the midlands area. Hope it stays cold!

Cheers.

Well, I live in Buxton and don't have any method of transport but walking, so it's my only option. I heard Goyt Valley is good. I go to the fields surrounding Corbar Cross and Solomon's Temple if you know them? There aren't great amounts yet. A 1-2 hour search at the Corbar field had about 70 odd, many of which were small. The other place only had the odd scattered few. Hoping to find a lot more on Wednesday as I am off work and am planning to save them for next week.

I should imagine Buxton is fantastic for libs as cool temps, high altitude, lots of rain, lots of sloping fields etc.

I've never been to Buxton, but I've a friend who lives in Chapel-en-le-Frith. He finds plenty of libs every year, I wish I lived in the Peak District!

Most of the fields by me are overlooked by farmhouses or people are regularly working nearby and it seems whenever I go to look on sports fields etc the grass cutters turn up at the exact same time lol, it get's annoying. I should imagine it's a lot more peaceful up north.
