no pins from golden teachers
    #1684320 - 07/03/03 03:21 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

Has anyone had trouble with golden teachers being difficult or slow pinners. I've got cased rye, millet, and wheat straw. Casing colonized rapidly, no overlay. No pins either. Going on three weeks. Any info greatly appreciated.

if the casing is colonized, then make sure to give it plenty of fresh air and 12 hours of light a day.

i found GTs (pic above) to be the same as the other strains. check the other criteria: temps ok? enough air exchange? any signs of contam? a little light? nice and humid?

mebbe you just have a few more days to go. good luck, man - and have you seen overlay, to be sure that isn't it? a lot of people post pics of casing already far too white: me too, in the above pic, from my early days.

good luck

Did you cold shock 'em? AFO mine had the same problem ending with stroma because of not cold shocking....

GT should pin without the coldshock. Lower your humidity and increase airexchange. Maybe leave the growchamber open for a few hoursa day would do wonders. Else go for the coldshock to be sure.

I might be at the point where i need to start over. The mycelium has gone from the cased grains. And I noticed there was green mold in the casing on the straw. The straw itself still looked white and healthy, so I washed off the casing and dunked it like a cake. I then sprinkled a scant casing on it. I'll let you know. In the mean time I started a few more petri dishes of GT. Thank you for the speedy replies.

GT`s have allways pinned like gangbusters and are one of my favorites...They allways seem small on the first flush for some reason with bigger fruits on later flushes...

Fan them 5 times a day. Keep the temps low... if you are doing petri dishes and spawn i'm sure you already know that and it's just redundance. That's about all you can do for em.

Check out salt for green mold in the Contam forum. The asshole down the street has great luck with it.
In the old days he says he always solved non pinning with an increase of air exchange. (given that all other conditions are correct)
As much as 15 - 20 times a day might be necessary to "air shock" them. Then reduce to 5 or so once something happens.

I tossed all of the cased grains. The straw that I completly hosed of the casing, dunked, flipped over in it's box and sprinkled with moist succulent soil has began to pin. Will keep you posted if it comes to full fruition.
