How much better is PCing than steaming?
    #16852414 - 09/15/12 04:24 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I have a large old pressure cooker that I used for my first grow. The problem was that when I reached 15psi there was a small leak in the seal so I had to keep heat up to maintain pressure. Of course at the end of the hour when I turned the heat off the pressure went down fast. I found that my brf cakes had shrunk away from the walls of the jar and had a clay like texture but I used them anyway. Ive had a dismal grow so far, 1 cake grew 4 tiny mushrooms, the others sit idle still. They also took 7 weeks to colonize. I wonder if when I dropped pressure so quick in the pc maybe I flash boiled water out of my jars and they were too dry? I cant think of anywhere else I screwed up. So if I try it again, I can scrub the PC rim with steel wool and maybe get a better seal but I wont know until its too late anyway. Is it worth continuing to try the PC or would it be well enough to just boil jars from now on?

what type of PC'er do you have?  does it have a rubber seal between the lid and the pot?  if so, just go buy a replacement seal.

but you "keeping the heat up" isn't really making the contents of your PC any hotter than if it didnt have a leak, given your still at a constant 15 psi.  if your at 15psi your temp will be a pretty constant 250 or so.  hope this helped

Yea, definitely sounds like a lack of moisture.

You need to make sure the gasket (rubber seal) is fit in to the lid right, and if it works no longer get another one as suggested above.  You don't want the pressure dropping down quick like that (I've had this problem you speak of before, only solution was to replace the pc).

Mind you, you can always steam the jars in a large pot so long as you're just doing cakes, which works fine.

I would just use a steam bath this time around. You aren't doing grains so why even bother with a PC.

PC's not really any better than steaming for BRF. You might be able to get a replacement gasket for cheap for it if that's where it's leaking from. You're definitely going to need PC if you ever want to do whole grains.

Its an old all aluminum metal to metal seal, thats what I ment by using steel wool. If both metal lips are sanded down well it did manage to stay tight for 1 of my 3 test runs. Also, what I ment by keeping the heat up was that since I was losing pressure I had to keep the heat up to keep building the steam, rather than just let it simmer at 15psi. If you have enough water inside this is fine, and it was, except when you take the PC off the burner at the end you're no longer generating steam and your pressure drops to 0 within a few minutes rather than the hours it should take to cool down. So all of the sudden I had jars that were 250F and the water in them was happy to turn to steam at 212F again, I must have doomed myself right there. The fact that they took 7 weeks to colonize was probably because they were starved for water. Anyway, thanks for the info, the second try should be much easier now that I know what to expect. Im not sure if I can put a rubber seal on a PC that was only metal but Ill ask the company what they think. I almost dont want to try my mushrooms now, because if I dont like them, I'll have no reason to try again, but did like growing them lol.

I only PC Grains.

Steam sterilize BRF Cakes. I've found PC'ing
them causes the substrate to settle to much
in the jars.
