One of the ideas behind straw logs is to maximize fruiting area, so you don't want the diameter:length ratio to be too high, so I don't think trying to make a log out of a garbage can would be very advantageous to your yeild (but I'm sure you'd get some HUGE mushrooms!) Also -- you might have to compost with this amount of substrate and 'turn' or mix it up, or the middle might get too hot. Just a guess.

I know someone from Mycotopia has composted using garbage cans before; you might want to post a question there (I don't remember from where or when the post is.) TMC has a great section on composting, but otherwise there is usually a max depth people use for just spawning straw.

Just my opinion,

I think if you get the log to large, you will have heat problems. The log will begin to compost.

what about taking a garbage can and making 6in layers seperated by plastic? so basically u would have "cakes" made from straw 6in deep like about a tire on a care thickness and all. would that work?
