Another newbie question...
    #16848146 - 09/14/12 07:35 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I am thinking of starting a monotub. Correct me if I am wrong but the polly-fill only preserves the moisture and allows FAE; not protects against contams, right?

What if I cut a 3/4" hole about 1 inch above the substrate and two 3/4" holes on the opposite side about 3 inches above the substrate and filled them with polly-fill leaving the lower hole open. I then installed a hose(to the lower hole) which is attached to a 5 gallon bucket that was filled 1/2 way with water and a small computer fan installed on top. Inside the bucket would be a 10 port ultrasonic fogger. I thought about turning it on for about 4 hours a day and off for 18 hours. Would this work? I read that the ultrasonic fogger I have also serves as an "ion generator."

Any comments, suggestions, or info would be appreciated. Thanks fellas.

The substrate in a monotub holds all the moisture it needs for the first flush.

Ployfill in the holes provide filtered FAE(Fresh Air Exchange) and GE(Gas Exchange).

Please dont make a mono complicated...no ultrasonic...look at the tub in my signature...a quarter pound and I didn't really mist it but once, I just fanned it a couple times a day.

4 hours running an ultrasonic will over saturate the substrate

You would need to ditch the polyfil from the point you begin using the fogger or ditch the fogger. A fogger could be ideal for 50/50 peat casings since they will readily absorb and evaporate water but there is also the issue of uneven water distribution which is part of what makes the ultrasonic tricky IMO.

Also, what you describe sounds like overkill to me. A single fogger running for a few minutes every hour can keep a tub sized area hydrated with the right amount of air flow happening.

yes ditch the fogger and all that other crap, also stick to the monotub tek and make it like it says. A monotub can sustain itself it just needs to be fanned everyday. I use the orissa tek never failed me.
