Casing in the bag or a plastic tub?

A person who I know recently bought a shroom kit. It came with a bag of rye berries to spawn it, and a bag of compost. This person has successfully done this project before, but in the past the shop had provided a tupperware bin with a snap-down lid to do the casing in. This time the instructions are to case it in the filter-patch bag and not to open it till it's time to harvest. This leads my friend to think that there is only one flush with this method. Can casing be done either way successfully? What size bin should is appropriate for a 3-pound bag of compost? Can more compost be added to get a bigger yield?

By casing do you mean spawning to bulk? It's hard to work out from your post. Casing is applying an often nutrient free layer onto colonized substrate to raise humidity and such but it's not needed at all with cubensis.

For sure but I would much rather do it in a tub.

I would say 4"+ thick substrate is good, but I have limited experience so someone else can probably tell you better.

Yes, but the less spawn you use the longer it takes to colonize and the chances of contamination go up. Most people use about a 25-50% spawn ratio but it is certainly possible to get away with a lot less.

I'm sorry, I thought that casing meant to mix the granuals a colonized spawn to a substance like compost in order to increase yields. Apparently, casing means to add a layer of pure compost on top of the mixing granuals into the compost?
