Distilled water question
    #16847292 - 09/14/12 04:06 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

My cities water treatment is quite harsh, and I am a strong believer in using distilled water. Anyways I noticed that the distilled water I have access to says the ingredients are "distilled water, ozone" and on the front it says "ozonated". I'm wondering if the ozone can harm spores or mycelium, I can't find much information on the subject

Well I am not a scientist but seeing as ozone is created naturally during thunderstorms from lighting. I would doubt it. Not sure if rain traps any of that on its fall to earth but I would imagine to some degree it would and mush have no problems flourishing in the wide open. Just my .02  Take care!

Not sure if manmade ozonation has any different impact than naturally occuring...

Distilled water doesn't work all that well for growing. Just storing spores.

Isn't that because of the minerals missing or something on that order not because of the ozone?

Actually, I believe that the tonic aspects of deionized water make
it less useful for spore storage.

It is used for the long term storage of mycelium though.

Do not use ozonated water. The ozone will kill microbes and I've read it's anti-fungal but I dunno if this includes all fungi or some specific ones. Also as said before about the distilled water, Don't use it. Distilled water is pure H2O. It is stripped of all impurities but most importantly the ions, salts, and minerals that your myc needs to be healthy.

Say for example I was to use nice clean river water... would I boil it even before pc'ing... just to be sure, or is that urge overkill.?

was talking with someone in private earlier, they advise only using distilled water if your tap water isn't decent.

anyway, if your trying to save money stick with tap water

Where do you live?? There's just no way your tap water could be THAT bad to cause problems with your grow if you properly sterilize.

Don't use water that's ozonated.

Use spring water for everything except syringes its got minerals where distilled doesnt.  Thats why distilled is good for syringes.

Where I live the tapwater has low levels of peroxide, high amounts of chlorine and the highest fluoride levels in all of ontario. id rather not end up eating that lol. Is it true that the "ozone" has anti-microbial properties?

Where I live, tap water smells like the pool, literally turn on the faucet and smell clorine.....looks and tastes fine....and I use it for every aspect of this hobby(except agar) with great results.

Personally I use distilled water aswell the ozoneated u see on the bottle basicly means that they have stripped the water of all the particles in the water. Its basicly like an ionizer for the air but insead of air its water. I just boil the water for 10 min then use that. Most distilled water has 0.00ppm which is always a plus but from friends and research you should boil the water because the plastic bottles sit for hours in a hot truck for days or weeks and to the plastic bottle there in is made of chemicals so its only a matter of time before they seep into the water. Also the plastic caps on them don't act like a filter so if they arnt sealed properly that's an easy way contams can get in.
