    #1684573 - 07/03/03 07:20 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Another walk with the dog fruited these three mushrooms. There were tons of the first one growing everywhere. I only saw the second one time. The third unkown was picked on the way back in some grass with what looked to be tree bark of some sort that had been stripped and dumped. Any clue as to what these are?

a. Habitat (where and what does it grow on)
1. Horse poop, humid, wet

3. Horse poop, humid, wet

b. Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)
1. Not attached
2. Attached gills
3. Not attached

3. Cap 3/8 inch diameter by 1/2 inch tall. Stem 2 and 1/2 inches tall

d. Characteristics of the stem (color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)

I'll go along with Panaeolus antillarum for #1.

#2 looks like Polyporus elegans.

#3 looks at first glance like a Coprinus, but the slimy cap suggests it could be Bolbitius. A spore print would settle things. Those look pretty young, so you might find out if they're Coprinus in a day or so if they start to degenerate into inky slime. Cut them in half and see if you can guess the spore color. Bolbitius should be brown and Coprinus black.

Happy mushrooming!

I'll let you know if they start to degenerate. Since the first find I've found another one of the first type about 10 inches tall. The cap is like 3 inches wide.

at first glance, the first one reminded me of Stropharia semiglobata.

my ? is: is s. semiglobata synonomous with something? also it often has a small barely noticeable ring and a viscid cap when moist.

from what a i recall they look like Pn. antillarum.

#1 and #3 both pretty much degenerated into slime overnight. that 10 inch one made a disgusting pile of slime that dried and had to be scraped off of the plastic lid it was resting on.

I don't doubt that #3 turned into slime, it's a Coprinus, thats what they do

#1 turning into goo was probably do to bugs. No biggie, just keep looking man, sounds like you found the right place.

Happy 4th!

So I went back with my camera to get some shots in the wild, and I got more than I expected. Luckily I took a paper bag to bring 'em home in.

Psilocybe cubensis

Below is the big shroom on the left of the first picture. A picture-perfect example IMO.

This one below was found separate from the others. There was no visible horse dung around at all, just some hay or grass shavings (spent dung?).

I'm taking spore prints of the three large ones pictured and would like to follow a domestication process to get a good Texas strain going from these. Is it worth it? Yay or nay...

The #1 specimens look very similiar to a coprinus? that I have found in Jamaica. They turn to muck very quickly there (hot and humid), 2-3 hours sometimes.

I am a fairly incompetent mushrooms identifier, but I think yours are the same. They actually look alot like a Panaeoli, and I have seen them in the middle of big flushes of P cyanscens.

The quick dfferentiation I made when sorting thru handfuls of cyans, was that my 'slime mushroom', like yours has a very waxy looking shiny cap. Here is a pic for comparison.

The sporeprint color is black slime......;)

If you have some of these in your bag or basket and you cover and distance at all they cane really make a mess. I learned my lesson, I carry sheets of newspaper now to keep things seperate.

Yea waxy and shiny is a good description. When I went back to take photos most were already gone. The few that were left were ignored because I found the p. cubes and I wansn't going to wait for anyone to come around and catch me taking pictures of horse shit (damn rednecks).

I rounded up a few cubbies myself ...they were kinda hard to find but we did manage to pick some really nice ones ...I printed 2 of the best ones that are very dark prints. I will be printing a bunch more this year so pm me if you think you might want one. I printed them on paper and need to know whats the best material to print them on  because i am kinda new to doing prints...

That #3 one definately isn't active, right? I found a bunch of those in horse manure/shavings that were spread out in a horse pasture a few weeks ago. There were thousands of them, but I was prett sure they weren't active. :frown:
