FINALLY - Morels!!! Morchella deliciosa (PIX)
    #1684434 - 07/03/03 06:01 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

WaaaaaaHoooooo!!! You don't understand how excited I am to have found these morels. After months of searching, I have FINALLY stumbled across them, and in the most random places: My backyard. hahaha!!

These were growing under a tree, in some wood chips/bark mulch. We had some morning dew/fog the last few days, and Im guessing thats what made them come up.

So please, give me some advice to cooking them. I have put them in the fridge because I don't know what to do with them... I might dry them for later use. What should I do?

That's awesome, angryshroom!  I think I do understand how happy you were to find them because I freaked when I found my first wild morels this spring!!!

I'm sure others here could give you some better cooking tips than I would be able to!
Enjoy, though!!!

Peace,

RebelSteve

Drying is a great way to preserve them. It helps concentrate the flavor.

Morels are great for basic Fried Mushrooms - one of the best. They also make an incredible Cream of Mushroom Soup.

A google search will give you more recipes than you can shake a shroom at.

Happy mushrooming!

Morels are teh GrEaTeZt.

No, they're edible, and one of the best edible species. You can get them at the grocery store dried. Here they run about $15 for a quarter ounce.

The FAQ has a pretty good list of the known active species. Or you can check out mjshroomer's various pages. Or several other references online like Erowid.

Happy mushrooming!

errrrhmmmm

Post in a different thread. This is my morel thread.

Anyways. Ive taken them out of the fridge, and I started drying them on a fan. I'll then transfer them to my drying chamber in a few hours.

I guess I'll try to cook them in butter and garlic, and eat them on french bread or something. Maybe put them in a stir-fry ?

IM SOOO EXCITED!

Yes, garlic n butter 'em. I think there was another thread in the Gourmet Mushrooms forum that talked about recipes for morel mushrooms.

I think this is it:

Congrats on the find Angry! Quite late in the season too. Do you live in high elevation?

Make sure to get a good recipe, I tried the ol' sautee method earlier this year and didn't cook them right. They were good, but I really was hoping to make them crunchy. There are a million websites out there with free recipes, put them to good use.

Stymee

ps. Did you ever rent those movies I told you about?

If you dry some of them (I've only tried dried morels :frown:) use the warm water that you soak them in as a stock to make a rich gravy to accompany steak, poultry, game etc

Damn I'm feeling hungry now !
