Need help with buying a new tent
    #16842965 - 09/13/12 08:00 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I'm planning on going on a hiking trip with a buddy in a week and I'm trying to find a cheap, yet reliable 2 person tent for 3 seasons. I know that with a good tent, you're gonna have to dish out some cash, but I'm looking at staying around $75 dollars. I'm not doing any extreme hiking. I just want something that's small, light, and can fit in my hiking bag. I've got one possible tent that I was thinking about buying, put I wanted to put it through you guys before I make a stupid purchase

Alps makes good tents. They're usually "outfitter grade" meaning they're designed to last. However, they're fucking heavy. I own several tents, two of the three are made by Big Agnes. The Fly Creek 2 is ultralight. I also own the Fly Creek 1. I'm a minimalist so I prefer a lighter tent, but if you don't mind an extra pound or two then the alps would make a great 4-season tent. Just remember that when backpacking every ounce is a pound.

thanks! I was looking at lighter tents, but I'm not that avid of a backpacker (yet...) to purchase a minimalist one, sometime in the future I'll get a lighter one, but this tent is just going to be meant for 15-20 mile hikes that I'd want to camp on. Are there any other cheap light weight tents that you'd recommend?

REI makes good, light, and moderately priced tents of all styles and sizes.

Came here to say the same thing. Check out the Half Dome 2!

I just got the North Face Rock 22 (5 Lbs) and I love it!

Yeah if you are trying to stay under $100, an REI tent is probably a good compromise between cheap and still pretty quality.

Although I don't see any for 75.. this is the cheapest one I found - http://www.rei.com/product/731378/rei-camp-dome-2-tent

Whatever you do, don't buy an Ozark Trail (walmart brand) tent. They are cheap (like ~$40), and good for about 1-3 uses before they normally fall apart.  I call them disposable tents.
Eureka is another brand that sells cheap tents, but they are heavy, and I have experiences with them leaking.

thankfully there's an rei store not too far from me, so I think I'll head over there sometime this weekend and get it. Thanks, shroomism.

you won't regret the purchase. I hope, however that you'll get hooked on wilderness, and if you do, I highly suggest investing in a Big Agnes tent before they get too popular and become the next Mountain Hardware

Really though, I own REI half dome 2 and it is a great tent as mentioned before by another poster. If you get into backpacking hardcore then the Fly Creek 1 that I have actually weighs less than my hammock system :shocked:The tent weighs nearly 50% lighter and when backpacking, that miniscule weight can mean everything (the tent weighs around 2.5 pounds as compared to my 5lb hammock system.

My advice is pay the 20 bucks and become a member! Not only will you get sweet dividends every year but you can return anything any time for any reason! It is well worth it!!!

Where you live plays an important role in the tent you buy. Here, in Florida I have a two season tent which is, in all actuality a four season tent as we effectively have two seasons. If it actually gets cold where you are, you're going to want a solid three season tent, lower to the ground, etc. Try and go lightweight.

Awesome tent! Also, good call on becoming a member. It's awesome because everything you buy there is garunteed for life. You just take it back if it breaks, they look it up in the system and give you a new one that day :awethumb:

nice. How are things when it comes to renting equipment as a member? Good deals, bad deals?

I want to try to get the full use out of my membership, so I'm looking seeing what I can use it for.

Next step is to buy a sleeping bag when the cold weather sets in, but for now I'm gonna use a yoga mat and a well insulated blanket for sleeping

I've never inquired about renting anything b/c I have shitloads of gear, but kepp an eye out for their next "garage sale". It's for members only and they sell used items and very slightly damaged stuff. I wouldn't buy any climbing gear at that event, but i've picked up lots of great camping and paddling stuff for dirt cheap.

the lady that signed me up suggested hitting up the garage sale when it comes up. I want to try to score a hammock or a new pack there

Now it's time to scour the shroomery with the search function to see if I'm packing my bag with necessary and unnecessary items. I saw a thread about it a long time ago, time to go diggin....

those threads make me want to just go ultra light now, but that's how I'll end up dying

I'm only gonna bring a knife and my natural instincts with me on the trip now.

On another note, the saleswoman at rei asked me if I was going to buy a footprint for my tent, but I told her no. Is it fine if I just bring a small tarp to put under my tent instead of paying $30 for one of their footprints?

Absolutely. that footprint nonsense is just a way to suck a few more dollars out of you. I don't even use a tarp. Just gather some pine boughs or some type of vegetation you can use to put under the tent. It's more comfortable, and it's better insulation, PLUS, it's way better at keeping water out of direct contact with the tent bottom. A tarp collects water if it gets btwn the tarp and tent.

 Pine needles/vegetation makes a good bottom layer. Although not always an option..
footprints can help.. the main purpose would be to protect the bottom of the tent and also prevent water from collecting.
however for a footprint to work properly it need to be cut to the exact size of the tent but just a little shorter, so none of it is sticking out from the edges.
I have used that cheap 5mm plastic sheeting from home depot, cut to size works great.

now, I've got one more good question before I leave saturday for the hike. When it comes to water how much should I bring and how should I pack it. I read on your thread that a gallon of water a day is a good amount, so do you still suggest that? And besides getting a camel pack, is their any alternative to packing the water while using space efficiently?
