Panaeolus subbalteatus in grass clippings(PICS)
    #1681576 - 07/02/03 09:24 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

While looking for Ps. weilii today in a neighbors backyard, I checked their grass clippings pile and found a good bit of Panaeolus subbalteatus. No weilii, but hey, subbs are better than nothing

Some pictures...

I'm in GA, and the potency sucks on these things. I'd go as far as saying they lack psilocybin all together. When eaten in large amounts you'll feel the speedy effects and a little weird euphoric feeling, but I think thats all due to the hundreds of other chemicals found in subbs. I think they contain more known chemicals than any other active species, they are a chemical factory. I have found some Pn. subbalteatus before that were indeed active, and I did experiance classic psilocybin intoxication, but these were from subbs that actually stained blue, well atleast 1 out of every 5 would stain blue.

The reason the subbs pictured here are colored weirdly is because they were soaked with 5 inches of downpur for the last 3 days. They weren't water logged but they were defnitely a little wet in the cap. They dried out the regular tan, yellowy color though.

you think subbs growing out of cow shit would have better potency? They do grow from cow shit right?

They can grow from cow dung, I've seen it before, but its not common. They grow more commonly from horse dung and dead grasses/straw.

The potency when found on dung doesn't seem to make a differnce from what I've seen and experianced. It has more to do with the area your in and the potency of the sub-strain of Pn. subbs is in your area. Also, subbs found in early spring tend to be a bit more potent than when found in summer, IMHO.

BTW: I'm in GA, whoever asked.

No, never. Pans never grow on wood. They favor dung, hay, and grass clippings.

Psilocybe subaeruuginosa area wood loving species. People in Australia call them subbs and that causes confusion if someone does not abbreviate the panaeolus subbalteatus with Pn. subbs and P. subbs for the Australian species.

Yeah, but I spelled out the entire latin name, plus when I abbreviated "Panaeolus subbalteaus" I did use "Pn" instead of just "P."

If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.
