It's primarily used for adding calcium, sulfur, and it helps keep your grains from sticking together.
As for grains, yes they are easier than birdseed. I was a wbs fan until I tried rye, never going back again. If you are in a place that is on azurestandard's shipping route they offer a good deal on rye.

I just wanna say you didnt have tgo stoop to his level and start calling names and swearing. The reason responces like that get thrown around on here is because it seems like common sense to some people to just use google or the search engine to figure shit out. It gets annoying to have to answer the same question 20 times or answer something that took 10 seconds to google and figure out. Not saying he was justified at all. Just playing devils advocate.
As for driving around town to get supplies. You know that you could just use a phonebook and get the #'s and call before you hop in the car and waste the gas. Also if you are going to a mom and pop garden store and you are friendly and dont seem like a punk kid doing something wrong they will work with you. The store i use will go out of his way to order me stuff since I was friendly and talked to the guy. He will even order it if he doesnt make much on it. On my 4 cu. ft bag of verm I saw his price and he only made 4 bucks selling me it from list price. I tried to give him more buck he refused maybe that why he likes me lol. He did tell me i couldnt get powdered gypsum but he got me pelleted instead works just fine. His excuse was that he could only get pelleted because it all they carried since it doesnt clog up large spreading machines like powder would.
As for finding rye berries like the other said call it grain. If you cant find it there you could always try and find a health food store. Its what I ended up doing when i started off and i still do it because the people there know me and now give me a 15-20% discount even if i buy small quantities. It maybe more then going to a feed store but i like the people and its helping them stay in business. Also its where i get my agar from.
As for the cups to pounds question. You wont know till you get some infront of you and weigh a cup. You are trying to use a measurement for volume to figure out a measurement for mass. So with out knowing the substances density you wont know. However as i typed this there is a way to figure it out. If you know the dimensions of the bag and the weight you can figure it out. So i googled a 5 pound bag its dimensions are 11 x 5 x 3 inches which = 165 cubic inches. Now that we know that 5 pounds is 165 in^3 we can get it down to 1 pound by dividing by 5 which = 33 in^3. So 1 pound is 33 in^3. which needs to be converted to quarts and we all know (well i used google) that 1 quart = 57.75 in^3. So then we take 1 pound at 33/57.75 = 0.571428571 US quarts. So 1/2 a quart is roughly a 1 pound.
Now note those dimensions were of the bag so they are not going to be exact in anyway. Since the bag may have 4 inches of air space or anything else like that... So take the .5 qt = 1 pound as ball parked on the low side most likely.

Yep, I did stoop to his level because I felt somewhat offended at being called retarded when I did search...this forum. It didn't occur to me to try google since I figured it was an odd question not many people would need to know the answer for. So I figured I'd post the question and if someone in the future had the same question, they could easily find an answer here. I'm not here to make enemies by any means, I need the help from people here. His remark just kinda irritated me. My apologies.
I've tried the phone book for some stores, but some cases it's an excuse to get out of the house and do something. Most folks are nice and easy to deal with, they just don't know what exactly I'm looking for but it's been difficult to describe what EXACTLY the items I need are for in other uses because no one around here even knows what mycology is and even though everything we use is used in agriculture, I don't know what the more common terms for things are or what to describe their use as. What I've learned about gypsum and rye grain here will definitely help me in the future and I appreciate everyone's help.
Thank you for showing me that math Zepski, I can use that in other applications too
