Bruising or contams? First grow.

This is my first grow. I'm about 6 days into the fruiting chamber and small pins are forming along the base of my cakes. However, I didn't dunk my cakes. My mistake was to just get them wet for about 10 mins and then roll them. Although it seems like the problem is dehydration, I feel that it could also be from excess misting. During colonization, the cakes looked 100% healthy. I am very worried that this is mold of some sort. Can someone please verify that this is just some noob mistake that caused bruising?

It's bruising. Those cakes look really dry.. not dunking was the first misstep I'd say. Dunk after the first flush.

I can tell you need more FAE. Badly.
Only mist when the moisture droplets on the surface of the cake have evaporated. And then mist lightly. Fan after misting, always.
I can't tell from the pics if it's contam but to me it looks like fuzzy mycelium that's bruised.
You don't have to dunk after birthing, but it's suggested so that you have as much water in your cakes as possible.
-Is you SGFC designed properly? 1/4" holes 2" apart on all six sides? FC raised 2"-4" to allow airflow underneath?
-Do you know the humidity inside the FC?

I would dunk your cakes for a full 20 - 24 hours. 10 mins is hardly anything. Then use that time to make sure your FC is proper.

Thanks very much for the info. There are already pins on the bottom of my cake about 1/8 of an inch long. Should I just harvest those small ones and dunk the cake, or is there an alternative method to dunking I can use? I don't want to damage or stall my cakes growth by dunking them. It seems to be pinning is taking place only at the bottom anyways.

What are you seeing that indicates a need for FAE? Im getting ready for my first grow and trying to get a good feel for what the warning signs are for various problems

The sign you need more FAE on mushrooms fruiting bodies would be mycelium growing up the stipes.
The indicator in your case is thick mycelium you see growing. It isn't being told by the environment to produce fruiting bodies, so, you're missing a pinning trigger. The top three, in order, are: full colonization (+consolidation), FAE, evaporation.

I have a bunch of holes drilled in my FC. Other than more fanning, is there any way to get more efficient FAE? Should I direct one of my bedroom fans towards the chamber?

The pins can survive a 24 hour dunk. Just leave them on there and submerse the cake. They'll be fine (=

I'm gonna dunk them right now. I'll get them out tomorrow evening. Thanks a lot for the help!

Not cheaply. A humidifier that forces fresh air in is how I would do it in a greenhouse. Though I suppose the monotub is the next "step up" from a sgfc. They use a bunch of holes stuffed with polyfil for FAE.

This should be enough, provided your sgfc is to specification.

They're all about 2 inches apart. However, the drill bit I used was slightly smaller than 1/4 inch. As long as the cakes aren't contaminated, I will just research and improve my FC.
