Mantras & Chants
    #1684036 - 07/03/03 03:40 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

I have just watched the film Baraka (a must see if you haven't already) under the recommendation of a few of the shroomery members.
After having witnessed this incredible film, I feel the need to incorporate some type of chant or mantra into my life. perhaps several, as long as they have meaning to me. for what it's worth i loved the chant that was in the semi circle, with the hand shaking, i could groove to that one all day....

Now to the question, does anybody have a mantra of chant that does not use english but rather syllables or a foreign language? I dont want my naitive tongue because it lacks meaning to me, and most of the chants i have found are all like "oh thou holy mother earth" type of gibberish..

That page was vey helpful, and yes this movie is completely mindblowing.... no narrative structure whatsoever, like a documentry but better than mindless fact spewing... just pure human moments (waking life referance, dont be an ant), both good and bad.

LOL...so you'd rather chant a word or phrase in a language that has no cultural significance or a definition with which you can relate??

Comprehension behind the meaning of the words used in a mantra is the key to their effectiveness.  I'm sorry...I don't mean to giggle, but really...the reason why you don't want to chant in English is the very reason why you should.

Ol'orun agbe o.

Blinkidiot>>I love that "dadadadadadadadada" part of the movie too...that and the chick-a-dee song with the chimes! I should start a post simply about Baraka.
Concerning your "chant-ra" query, perhaps if you repeat a word long enough it loses it's meaning anyhow and just transmits the vibrations and THEIR feeling. I'm with you though..most of these New age evocations sound contrived to me too. Sanskrit or some other 'strange exotic' language just seems more meaningful...perhaps because we don't understand it...Familiarity breeding contempt y'know?
I wonder if some Tibetan youth look at their culture as boring and contrived? Anyways there is a current post about this in spirituality titled 'om, hoo, blessed be,'

salute.

I have heard my language butchered and have not been able to find any real chants using the regular search engines...  If i could find something that evoked something within me, spawned from within my own language, I'd be all over it... Unfortunately I have yet to come accross anything of that sort; it's all new age crap that is like 2 pages long... first i'd have to read it then take a day or two to memorize the whole thing.....  Most english ones are too clunky as each word has upwards of 3 sylables...  Please point me to some better sources if you know of any.

I am also ready to admit that I have much to learn about both myself and spirituality in general  :ooo::crazy:

...One of the neater chants I've heard came from a wiccan band I listened to...and, god, I wish I could find that song again.  It was really catchy.

"We are the flow, we are the ebb
We are the weavers, we are the web"

...But it's probably not appropriate for what you want to use it for.  Who knows, though?  But if you checked out some of the less bubbleheaded wiccan, pagan, and Xaos pages, you might be able to troll something of use from them.

blinkidiot. My point was simply that it's the meaning behind what is being chanted that matters most. It's the meaning that empowers the chant. If you sit around chanting words you don't even know the meaning behind, you're pretty much just engaging in a personal psyco-drama. If you take the time to learn more about mantras from various traditions, you need to understand why each tradition utilizes mantras in their practices. Do a google search on the word Mantra and you'll find several good sites that discuss them in depth.

Best of luck in your search.

Love & Light,

Boppity
