Call me crazy, but the thought had crossed my mind.

The Romans used to feed Amanita muscaria to snails in order to break down some of the more harsh chemicals in the sacrament. They would then ingest the snails and trip, but with out the gastric discomfort. I don't know if the active compounds would be retained from the specie I have been growing, but I don't see why the fresh slug specimens would not.

I'll dry a couple out and send them your way. I think you would be a better judge...being European and all

On an awesome note....it works!!!!

I picked some DE up yesterday and spread it at the perimeter of my beds. Checked things out this morning and not a sign of any additional damage from slugs!

Yipeee!!!!

yuck ... we've got tons of slugs in the backyard here.  Maybe you could prepare them like escargot?

Oh yeah and beer traps work wonderful for slugs ... just bury a pie plate with the edges flush to the ground and fill it with beer.  In the morning check your trap and you'll find it full of drowning slugs.

Peace,

well it appears that my beer traps arent working, ive all but given up on my outdoor patches... i checked one today and it was infectd with green.,... sonofabitch.....
outdoor growing seems to be too much of a hassle fer me..... i fuggin hate nature....

THIS IS THE LAST STRAW..... IT ALL ENDS TONIGHT

im gonna wait in the dark near my patch with my shotgun....
as soon as i hear the slugs and snails, im gonna throw on the flood lights and tear the entire patch up.... NOTHING SHALL SURVIVE!!!!
IF I CANT HAVE MUSHROOMS NOONE CAN DAMMIT NOONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ARRRRGGGG

fuck snail bait, slug traps, beer.... the only beer involved will be the 12-pack i consume while waiting for the bastards (its important to be drunk before operating a shotgun)

its me or the slugs.....
if i dont post again in the next few days, well... u know what happened to me......
i god drunk and fell asleep....
and got eaten by the slugs.....

LOL!!!

Patience will show you if you give it a chance.

Have you tried DE? It worked wonders for me. The change was immediate.

One night the slugs were dining on my crops, the next they were no where to be seen. The difference was the application of DE.

Give it a try before you shoot your shit up.

You can get huge 25 pound bags of de at pool supply stores for whoever asked where you could get it.

Be careful, do not use the swimming pool DE for pest control it contains a large percentage of crystalline silica. Diatomaceous earth The stuff you want is DE containing mostly amorphous silica.
Hardwood ash is another thing that works as slug barrier, but has to be replaced, after rain or watering.

The same is true with DE. It has to be reapplied after rains.

why?
it's not exactly water soluble or anything. have you tried mixing in to the casing mix before applying the casing? I noticed that Lowe's (hardware store) now carries DE but it is 75% DE and 25% Slug bait
This would work but I would prefer 100% DE as my fungus is bait enough and I'm not to keen on the idea of eating slug bait by accident (or the possibility of it being absorbed into the fruitbodies).

I think it's because the DE gets compacted down by the water.  The way that DE works is that it's like billions of tiny shards of glass -- actually, it is billions of tiny shards of glass -- that irritate the hell out of critters and jam up and slice up the joints of insects' legs and such.

Don't breath the powder.

It is like Sev said, the water washes the powder into the soil and also compacts it so that it is not as effective.

I would steer away from any slug attractants. The less chemicals, the merrier. Do you know what they are using as the attractant?

nah, i didn't bother looking any further as there's no way i'd use it when there's a fish store up the street that sells 20lb bags of pure diatomite (same thing). it's a bit pricey but works well. i mix it into a bag of verm and use that to case. i have to patch frequently so the compacting isn't a problem. i wonder if it would be if i didn't patch tho.

So I have been an organic vegetable grower for several years now. I have used DE for insect control. DE works in one of two ways, by clogging up intesinal tracts or body parts of insects or by puncturing the flesh of soft bodies organisms like slugs and causing descication. Once DE gets wet it is of little use for pest control, it is typically used as a dry barrier and deterent. I have used DE successfully in the past by putting boards down in my garden, under which slugs will congregate. Then I would lift the board and dowse the fuckwads with DE and watch them desicate. God damn fucking bastard die. That was my typical mantra. At anyrate DE in a casing layer will not do it. It has to be kept dry.

Another thing you may want to try is a copper barrier. I used to protect my plant from slugs by putting plastic PVC pipe around them which was covered by this copper coated tape that used to by at a green house in SoCal. Copper is supposed to work because creatures like snails and slug were repeled by the free the electrons (it zaps them). Conceivably if you made a wood frame around your patch and surrounded the top the frame with that copper tape or come copper flashing you could keep slugs from getting into your patch in the first the place. It worked well for my veggies.

In the long run if you want to fight slugs without slug bait or other pesticides you must use a combination of beer traps, DE, copper barriers, and nightly raids to descimate their populations. Good luck soldier.
