casing question

hi i havent been able to locate a acceptable tek regarding pasteurizing the casing in the search engine. afoaf has some alum pans almost ready to case. he wants to use the oven, using the 50/50 or something similar. he just purchased some "dolomitic limestone" from the hydro store and has read on this site that it is bad for casing because of its high magnesium content. afoaf hasent been able to locate any other kind of ph buffering agent....although the pet store here carries crushed oyster shell but it contains pieces of charcoal, and its used for birds. what he would like to know is: -whats a good tek for using the oven to pasteurize? -anyone have good results with dolomidic lime? -is crushed oyster shell w/ charcoal a good buffering agent? i hope these ?'s make sense.

I've never had to pasteurize casings. I just mix the 50/50 dry, add water to a little past wet. nuke in the microwave for 3-5 minutes. the extra moisture evaporates. Done.
Never tried dolomitic lime. Only have hydrated lime (hoffman's brand) that i got from Home Depot gardening section (usually sold inside not outside)
Try the oyster shell, some edible strains actually need a certain amount of charcoal to thrive. See what happens and keep us posted.
If worse comes to worse, you can omit the lime altogether. Done this many times with decent results.
