To warm Or Not To Warm...Is the question

Hello everyone,
I inoculated 15 jars a few weeks back. I decided to try the BRF recipe and everything went smooth for the most part. I couldn't find the right jars to use, so I just used the pint sized ones. Anyways, here is the problem my house has central air, I turned down the air to let it get warmer, now it's at 77 degrees, up five degrees from what it was previously. The jars are cold sitting on top shelf, sunlight does come in once in awhile. Mazatapec is the strain I used. Not all the jars are at the same growth at this point, some are further ahead, some are behind. Ive read a lot about tubs and heaters, I am not home a lot and have 2 big Akita dogs and I don't want something to happen while I am gone. I don't want my house burned up over some jars. Paranoid yes, cautious nonetheless. What can I do to keep these bad-boys warm with a good temp? Or should I just make my tub throw the heater in it and not worry so much? Thanks...

Leave them at room temperature. 70-76 is perfect for them to colonize at. Lower temperatures just means slower colonization.

That verm looks far too chunky to be a decent 'dry verm layer' to me.

Yeah I've seen course Vermiculite... But that stuff by far takes the lead for COARSE.

also... expect slower colonization results with those tall jars when compared to results from the 1/2 pint short widemouths that are ideal.

its not now but if it gets too cold make a TiT..get an aquarium heater and two of the same size tubs and put the aquarium heater in the bottom tub and fill like 1/3 of the way with water and set it to like 75.very fireproof..

The COURSE Verm was bought at a local nursery for 8 dollars. We don't have the bigger places like Lowe's or Home Depot here. Kmart didn't have it, Wal-Mart didn't have it either. Saw one other bag and it was for 17 dollars at another store. Went for a drive one day to another town which was 2 hours away and that was at Lowes, where I bought this other Verm for 5 bucks a bag and it's like sand. I didn't know if I could or couldn't use it. So I knocked up 5 jars with it just to try it. Otherwise If I ordered it online, all this stuff would have been coming in at once and I didn't want to arouse any suspicion (if there would have been any). Here is the Verm.

It's no big deal to me if for some reason it takes weeks or longer. The idea is to get acquainted with the procedures and learn something that I normally wouldn't have. It's been alot of fun thus far. And spare time is very limited and I have been enjoying it so far. Next batch I will definitely use 1/2 pint jars. Patience is key obviously, but again I am in no rush to see the big results. Taking my time and doing alot of reading with the little amount of time I do have. The hardest part is distinguishing what is accurate and what isn't. Trial and error. Spores where from a Vendor from here.

I applaud your patience but when it comes to colonization, you want it to go as quickly as possible. We give myc a good head start in substrates by sterilization/pasteurization etc, but once inoculated, it's really a race to get that substrate fully colonized (and therefore contam resistant) before contams can get a foothold.

Right and I concur with your statement about colonization. That's why I was wondering about the heating element part because I knew my jars were too big and that Verm was pretty hefty, so I didn't know if I should do a TiT or not or take my chances with a slower growth cycle.. Either case I'm alright with the outcome. I just would prefer it to be a good outcome. But, all in all it has been great learning curve and there will be more curves. Just kinda confused really what to do. Verm is hefty, large jars, I just don't know. Right now they are on the shelf at 73 degrees. 2 weeks and this is what I have so far. Peace.
