QUESTION ABOUT USING PERLITE A SECOND TIME
    #16836203 - 09/12/12 04:53 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I had many inches of perlite in my shotgun chamber, and kept Dunking my brown rice cakes until they contaminated. My question is can I reuse my perlite with a new set of cakes? Is there sOme sort of soaking procedure in order to insure there are no contams lingering? If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it. Perlite isn't easy to come by near me

Simply wipe the fruiting chamber with soap and water.
Perlite is a mineral and can be used for years.  If you
want to rid the mold spores, Boil the perlite in a kettle
of water for a 5-10 minutes.

That. Or put in oven and bake. What I do instead of hasslin my wife to clean a pot.

I fill my bathtub with water and pour in a bit of bleach then set the whole fruiting chamber in there so the perlite is floating. Swish it around and rinse the tub and let it sit for 10 minutes or so. Let it all drain out then rinse really well with the shower head. The SGFC makes a good enough colander if you can prop it up off the base of the tub and let it sit for an hour or two.

The amount of perlite I have to deal with is far too much to make boiling anywhere near practical, and this has worked very well for me for quite a while now.

Not saying it's the ideal way to do it. It's been working for me.

I am a rather clean person, though. My bathroom gets cleaned regularly.

Untrue, it's called a disinfectant for a reason. If it did kill everything it'd be called a sterilizer.

:whathesaid:

Whatever the case, I haven't seen any contamination from contact with old perlite. Or any contamination at all, really. Not sure if lucky... or just good :Awesketch:

I like bleach, and agree with its usefulness as far as this hobby, but I was just afraid that it might not be easy to rinse the bleach from the perlite and may affect the cakes. Am I false?

If you're using tinfoil it won't matter.

Bleach/water  ratio is an excellent disinfectant, and will kill most of the mold spores and bacteria.  After mixing bleach with water, you should add an equal amount of vinegar to the water.

Bleach bombing is great for airborne bacteria though, and we use sterile procedures like gloves, alcohol, flow hoods, to control the mold spores and keep them out of our media.

The reason that mixing bleach and vinegar is a health hazard is not related to the toxicity levels of Chlorine (chemical symbol Cl2) but due to the toxicity of Chlorine Monoxide (also called Dichlorine Monoxide, Chemical formula Cl2O). Adding any weak acid to bleach (or Sodium Hypochlorite, chemical formula NaClO) produces Hypochlorous acid (HClO):

NaClO + H2CO3 = NaHCO3 + HClO

Dehydrating HClO (with, for example, Calcium Nitrate) releases Cl2O, the gaseous anhydride of HClO. Chlorine Monoxide is a stronger oxiderizer than Cl2, which means it is more reactive with lung tissue and your eyes among other things.

...good to know!

Hasn't killed me. Oh and here is where I got the idea from.

To Shea, I've never tried peroxide and vinegar.  It does help to add a bit of vinegar to your bleach/water combo though.  Mix the bleach and water first, and then add the same amount of vinegar as bleach.  This combo is much more effective than bleach alone.
