Mystery shrooms (revised!)
    #1681105 - 07/02/03 05:48 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

ok i foudn these musrhooms growing on some cow shit i jacked. there seems to be two different species growing but at night another species seems to imerge but then are dead by the time i check them in the day, i will try to capture those shrooms tonight with my night vision camera, but for now i need identification for the two shrooms in the pic. the paneleous look a like ,or however spelt, produces a pitch black spore print, i found them on the cow shit in miami florida. they bruise dark dark purple/ black. i've eaten at least ten of them at once and i didn't feel anything, mabye i ate somthing before hand that messed it all up. the other species of shroom on the bottom of the picture seems to be an enigma to everyone. they don't have gills, they have a sturdy black stem, thick to thinn from bottom to top respectivally and the cap is brown with black dots. the cap seems to be fadeing its color to a lighter shade after time and they grow extreamly slow.

Much better!

The bigger one is probably Copelandia cyanescens if it briuses blue and has a black spore print.

Hello,

I bet that there are about 3,000 cases every year here in Florida alone that people eat unidentified cow field mushrooms.

Maybe 90% of the people who pick shrooms in florida, have no idea how to identify them and about 90% of those people who find shrooms in florida seem to be willing to take the risk of being poisoned just to get off on funny-mushrooms.

I wonder why, I wonder who is to blame, if anybody

Keep on shroomin, if you dare,
GGreatOne234

They don't have gills on the underside? What do they have?

Even if they don't have gills, those are reproductive bodies. You should try to make a spore print with a couple of them.

Happy mushrooming!

Hi,

I also find those little black things on cow dung also, here on the other coast of Florida.

They grow in through the dung and they are very meaty fungi matter,

Difficult to describe; They remind me a little bit of Cordyceps because that is the closest thing i can match them to in any of my i/d guides

Keep shroomin,
GGreatOne234

no, no gills on the underside of the cap. here is a pic. the mushroom is very small so i don't know if you can see to well that no gills are present. the picture on the bottom is also a shroom that is unusual. it only appears in the night, and when it gets larger it seems to have fuzz on its cap. i think they die within a short time limit because i brought them in my house and they appeared when it was getting dark outside and then i checked them in my closet the next day and they were all dead. these are very coned shaped and extreamly to sensative to take spore prints, they practically disintigrate.

OK, your mystery fungus is challenging.

I think you've found a Poronia, an example of which is Poronia punctata. There are no gills because these guys are Pyrenomycetes - they're Flask Fungi. The spores are produced in asci within perithecia. The dark dots on the cap are the perithecia. If you were to cut one in half, you would see it's hollow and lined with asci producing spores.

The entire genus apparently only grows on dung. I can't find a key to the species in the genus, so I'm not going to be able to help ID past genus.

Hope that's helpful.

Happy mushrooming!

I got that one from Internet research. I looked through my books and can't even find a reference to the genus in them. There's a book out there on dung inhabiting fungi of New Zealand that I noticed during my search that sounds like it might be worthwhile.
