second thoughts on a pressure cooker Please Comment
    #16836524 - 09/12/12 05:37 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I am considering buying a presto 23 quart aluminum pressure canner with a pressure indicator. Would this be considered good enough for sterilization of jars and agar?

Any pressure cooker with a 15psi weight will do the job.  I recommend getting one that will fit several quart jars though, else you'll be shopping for one again later when you want to sterilize grains. (I don't know how many that will fit since I don't memorize model capacities)

I've been using a presto for 2 years, they are fkin great, it has never failed me, mine hold like 7 quart jars, it didn't come with pressure guage, just a rocker, so I drilled a hole in the lid and properly installed a pressure gauge, just like the one on an air compressor.

A little fyi, the rocker that comes with the prestos are DEAD accurate, I use the rocker and my pressure gauge when  I PC things, and as SOON as the pressure on the gauge reaches 15psi, the rocker instantly starts to very slowly rock. I was fkin impressed when I installed the gauge and checked if the rocker was accurate.

QFT. Psi gadget not needed. Slow rock to not let off too much steam and Presto (pun intended)

For those who don't have a PC and are considering a purchase, it wouldn't be a bad idea to get a smaller one that will still do quarts and then pick up a larger one later. I think most 12 quart PCs will fit 5 quart jars.

Reason being? Heats up much quicker, uses less energy, cools quicker. If you're cooking culture mediums it's convenient to have a smaller cooker sitting around.

well i prefer larger one because it takes damn near a whole day to do a batch of jars with one pc.  and 5 qts wouldnt even do one of my monotubs

i have two of them, they work great.

wal mart has a good sale online right now. after tax they are 80.22

i agree with rahz. when i'm PCing agar i use my little 8qt. it gets up to pressure twice as fast as the 23. but.......... if i could only have one, i'd go with a BIG one

Got the same one from amazon for less than a C note. Love it! If $ were no concern I would go with the AA.

I have an AA930 and a Mirro 12 quart. I originally had just the Mirro and it got the job done. Now I always do grain in the AA and always do cultures in the Mirro. Just saying, a smaller cooker could be a good purchase for a new grower.
