What if Jars Dry Out?
    #1683717 - 07/03/03 01:04 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

What if the substrate drys out during incubation? That would slow or stop growth right? So how can this be fixed...is there a way?

Dunking at birth

Injecting water into the jar may not be effective, and at the least could provide a pathway for contams.

Why would you birth if you cant get the damn mycelium to grow becasue of dryness? Inject water in there as last resort and do as sterile as possible!

If there is no mycelial growth at all, I'd toss it. I assumed he had some but it was slowed, not stopped, and that colonization was continuing, yet it is slow.

What's the situation? Is it still growing, has it germinated at all?

If you have the correct mix the jars won't dry out.

Well he has 2 jars that have 1 nickle size spot of bright white mycelium and the other 10 jars have no growth signs yet....this is 8 days after incoulation at a constant temp of 80*F. My friend is concerned for his jars as he said that his substrate (when he made it) was damp, but not THAT damp....I told him that it might be a water level situation due to his growth issues.

He was using the "Simple Cubensis Growing Technique" and it said that this is the proper mix for 12 jars:

6 Cups of Vermiculite
3 Cups of Brown Rice Flour
3 Cups of Water

When I used that Tek I always went a little heavy with the water. Anyway if your friend is concerned I would advise him to inoculate the jars with 8-10 cc's of sterile water.

Oh I thought I might bring this up since this fact came up earlier today. My friend made his substrate, put it in his jars, then PCed them and stored them for about 1 week until he used them, so perhaps in that time the moisture level in the jars lowered enough to slow down the growth....we are not sure.

Local Temp? How did you store the jars?

Hi Danny.

When i was doing brf, i had the same problems every time - the damn mix was too wet, or too dry. trouble was, a lot of the recipes talk about 'cups' and mls together, but a 'cup' is different in the UK and the US!

my problems were solved when i found this website (anno's) and clicked on the pftek for dummies link. basically, you wet the verm first until just below saturation, then add the flour. no tricky measuring, and perfect results every time - the consistency of well-prepared couscous!

(now your only lookout is making sure they don't take in water during sterilisation!)

bumping this thread to address my own concern.

i'm about a week through incubation. i inoculated WBS jars but have a feeling the jars are too dry. half of them which are GTs are showing positive growth, but rather slow. I shook the jars yesterday and today growth is picking up again but only at the bottom of the jars. the grain looks dry. i'm assuming growth is concentrated at the bottom because that's where the most moisture settles..

i only soaked the WBS overnight and i didn't simmer. i feel like they aren't holding enough water to colonize the entire jars. i'm planning on making new substrate possibly with corn since i've had success with it in the past and this was my first time doing WBS. since i dont have any more syringes nor do i want to order more i'm thinking of a G2G transfer once some of the jars colonize sufficiently to make a transfer possible.

any thoughts on the WBS? you think i'm just being impatient?

Stop hassling your jars, let them be. Either they will colonize or they won't.

I've tried a lot of different ways to prep grain. The best texture, in my opinion, comes from the three-step method.
Soak, simmer, strain. RR's video show it with rye, but you can do it with WBS too. WBS is small, I soak four hours and simmer ten minutes.

One method that that makes it easy to get the right content is to do it by weight.
For a half pint jar, weigh 60 grams of WBS and 30 grams of water into the jar. Don't soak or simmer, you just PC it like that.
Let PC cool naturally until pressure drops to zero, then take the jars out and shake them.

Texture isn't as nice, like I said. But the moisture content will be perfect.

OK I will let the jars be. But to be prepared for the worst I just thoroughly rinsed and de-floated a new bucket of WBS. Plan on soaking that for 24 hours, unlike 12 hours the last time..

Then I will rinse again and simmer for 10 minutes you say?

If by friday my jars show slow progess, I will G2G whatever colonized substrate I have into the new sterilized WBS that will hopefully be properly hydrated.

You soak and simmer to hydrate it to a certain level of moisture, not to a certain time.
You want your grain to be a little less done than you would eat. "Al dente", if you will. Remember it's going to cook longer in the PC.

So if you soak 24 hours, you may not need to simmer at all, just bring it to a boil quickly and then try a couple of grains.

But I do 4 hours soak and then ten minutes simmer when I do WBS.

I will do so. I'm monitoring the bucket to watch the WBS level rise as it absorbs moisture and then when it stops expanding it should be ready. I'm going to have to do a 24 hour soak though because I can only take the time to sterilize at a certain time of the day.

I will boil for about 10 minutes like RR's video says.

Hopefully the moisture content will then be right and HOPEFULLY my jars right now will colonize enough for me to do a G2G on friday. I'm really worried about them, I just think they're so dry that they're gonna stall..

You can inject sterile water, I have done it many times. I purposely left my current batch of grain very dry on purpose, means I can add lots of LC and wet grains have always favoured contams IME. This way my grains were 70% colonissed and I added 130ml more water yesterday now that it is well established.

Would I just boil a pot of water for 10 minutes and then soak up the water with a syringe? Is that all there is to it?
