Quick advice
    #1683560 - 07/03/03 10:00 AM (21 years, 6 months ago)

My dog's hamster is on her first cultivating attempt.  A 1/4 pint cake (P. Cub) was cased in vermiculite.  The container used was translucent, so it was wrapped on the sides with electrical tape; the bottom was not wrapped.  A few days after the first flush (2.1g dry ) and a pin re-initiation was employed only to find pins growing into the bottom of the dish, i'd say about 5-10 pins.  I suppose a little light was able to shine through the bottom.

Is it a good idea to flip the casing out of the dish to remove these inevidable abhorts so that they don't rot under the casing? and then put the casing back in the dish and reflip it.  Basicly it would be a sub-casing abhortectemy.  Or would it just introduce possible contam and forget about them and let the abhorts rot at the bottom?

Thanks!

I'd say pick em and spray the bottom with diluted h2o2. and patch case with more casing (around the sides if it shrank) and lightly mist again.

Thanks for the great advice. Well the pin-ectomy is completed; the casing was flipped and a tweesers pulled probably 20-30 pins between the bottom and the middle of the casing that were in a 'traffic jam' if you will. The organism must have been really confused, cause there were pins literally growing in circles! So, the bottom was covered with e-tape and the entire surface of the casing loaf was sprayed with dilute H2O2 solution. It will be give a day or two to recover, then try for more pins. Perhaps it would have been better to flip and grow from the bottom. It sure is fun to learn something new.

also, some brands of electrical tape wont block out light completely with just one layer, test it first...shine a bright light behind it and stick yer face in it, of course i doesn't need to be PERFECT...just use good judgement

peace
