Running before I can walk...
    #16828355 - 09/11/12 10:56 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Before I've even fruited my first (and only) cake, I'm looking to the future.  Rather than ask a million questions about it, I'll detail my plans and you experts can play a game of "spot the rookie mistakes".

My plan.

Get a kilo/2lb of popcorn/rye grains, wash, soak, rinse.
Put grains in filter bag, sterilise.
inoculate filter bag with spore syringe.
When 100% colonised, break up, sprinkle onto layer of sterilised Perlite, layer of sterilised verm on top (both moist).
Allow further colonisation.
Dunk/soak.
Put in fruiting chamber.

Essentially, I've ripped off taken "inspiration" from this pdf grow kit.  I'm sure there's methods to improve this method, but it looks pretty simple and affordable (and if the claims are correct, it's possibly going to yield 100g dry).

Any thoughts/suggestions?  I'm a total newb to this, but I think I'm capable of making it work, and I'd rather do a few "one off" grows than  lots of cakes.

TIA

I would look for some Teks and follow them.
Such as these.
One.
Two.
Three.

You would also benefit from the bulk cultivation section of the "Everything A New cultivator Needs To Know!" guide linked in my signature.  You're going to want to mix that grain spawn into a bulk substrate to take full advantage of it.

If you use Damion's Bulk Tek and Fail. It's
because that/you did't properly pasteurize
the bulk substrate.

My advice use the Proper Pasteurization Tek I've given you
by Shea25, its #3.

I would use jars to start out with other than spawn bags. Spawn bags will work fine, but I think jars are easier to work with at first.

Don't spawn the grain to perlite/verm. Spawn it to coir/verm or manure/verm

Thanks for the replies.

I've been doing nothing but read TEK's for the past two months!  Still, re-reading them helps consolidate the information

I'll get a few jars under my belt first I think.  Bags just look easier to me.
