What causes blue mold?
    #3119701 - 09/10/04 06:00 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

I just discovered that blue mold was starting to develop. It is not fuzzy like fruit mold but simply is turning the base of the cake blue. What might the cause of this be? I threw out the the cake. Should i destroy mushrooms on the cake, even if the mold hadnt reached them and there is no discoloration

here, in the faq, are the common nasties you may encounter in this hobby:

i can't think of anything 'blue' that it could have been, so it's possible it was just bruising. only you can tell, unless you have pics we can see.

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

This is my third attempt in less than a month.

I have now colinized penis envy BRF jars by injecting them in the center of the cakes. Some fuzz is starting to break the surface, but some of the fuzz is BLUE! The jars were simmered for 2 hours and pressure cooked for 90 minutes at 15 psi! Verm and foil layer protecting the cakes.

I know RR says it's penicillum, but it still competes with the myc and will inhibit full colinization.

What can i do with these cakes?
