Verm filter on rye
    #16831154 - 09/11/12 07:48 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

So I was wondering what y'all thought on using a layer of dry verm as an air filter after you fill your substrate jars with rye substrate. Then PC the jars and inoculate them through regular holes in the lid. The reason for this is alot of the people I've seen use rye methods also use modified lids with tyvek filters. This would be sort of a lazy man's alternative or at least a temporary solution in order to avoid contams during colonization.

Well, you wouldn't be able to shake them, which is one of the main benefits of using rye.  If you're shelling out the cash on a pressure cooker, I don't see why you'd skimp on the $2 it takes to make a set of SFD lids.

How would the dry verm stay in place? rye grain isnt like a pf cake.  it would allow it to fall in the nooks and crannies.  If you dont want to mess with tyvek, sfd, or whatever else the kids these  days are using I would suggest just buy a bag of poly fill. Punch a hole in the center of the lid stuff it and then PC.  Inoculate by shoving needle through poly fill and squirt.

It wouldn't work. Especially when you shake the jar, which is why people use rye, allows for faster colonization
