help w/mushroom ID
    #1683172 - 07/03/03 09:58 AM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I went on my first mushroom hunt today and, not being experienced whatsoever in identifying mushrooms, decided I?d seek some help here before I try them and destroy my liver (joke). I?m not too hip yet as to what the psychoactive mushrooms look like, so perhaps you all can help steer me in the right direction of what to look for.

I?m from Michigan, Lansing area, and all of the following mushrooms were found in a horse pasture. None have bruised blue.

Sorry for the image quality, the digicam is kinda crappy.

--------------------------------------
#1

Found these ones growing somewhere in the woods, from the ground, possibly near a stump (can?t remember). Has small gills, which are not visible due to crappy camera.

--------------------------------------
#2

These were growing from near a stump and may even be from the same spot as the previous picture (can?t remember). The only noticeable difference is that the spores/gills are darker.

--------------------------------------
#3

Was growing back in the woods, I believe from the ground...

--------------------------------------
#4
The bottom one is facing gills up, Top is facing gills down. Again, growing in the woods.

--------------------------------------
#6

These were growing from a log and have spongelike gills.

--------------------------------------
#7

There were 100?s of these growing from a pile of composted manure (horse, I believe). They?re grey/black and have smallish gills. Spores are black. This particular specimen got beat up on the way back, as they were all verry fragile. Many had the outer ends of the caps turning up, although plenty were still conically shaped. For some reason these gave me a strong DO NOT EAT vibe, but I?m clinging to a vague hope that they might be active, as there were so damn many...

--------------------------------------

Thanks, in advance, for any help!

I'll have to make some prints next time I go a-huntin'. They've dried out a bit much now...

Which mushrooms do your numbers apply to, btw? I've edited my entry to number them, so if you could tell me what your 1-4 correspond to, that would be great. Thanks again!

You're #4, or species #3, identified as Pananeolus foenisecii, I think is actually a Psathyrella species, possibly candolleana.

The spore print on them would be very similar to what you would get with foenisecii. A purplish brown.
