question about the amount of mycellin has to be coverd in jar before i can fruit
    #16829026 - 09/11/12 01:29 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Im using vermiculite and brown rice flour. Needle wasn't long when I inoculated all of mycelin is at top of jar. After 2 weeks the bottom half is still not. Can I just go ahead and ready it to be fruited even tho the bottom half is not colonized?

Er no, wait until they're fully colonised. If that takes another 4 weeks, so be it

Just give it time, and no matter what, DO NOT flip your jar upside down.

You should get a marker, outline where the mycelium ends, and each day look and see if it is just slowly creeping down to the bottom of the jar or if it is actually completely stalled.

EDIT: Also, when you inoculate the jars, try to press the needle against the side of the jar, and let the spore solution run down the side of the glass to the bottom half of the BRF/Verm.

"and no matter what, DO NOT flip your jar upside down."

First Post.

I've seen so many people with jars upside down. I've turn mine upside down a few times thinking the ambient light would help it grow. I am in the same boat as the OP.

Can you explain why not to turn the jars upside down? It seems like many have and without ill effect.

Thanks.

You'll disturb the dry verm layer &, possibly, allow for contams to grow on the substrate.

Might use the correct size jars next time eh?

People tend to flip there jars because instead of using the
recommended jars they use TALL half pints. Over time the substrate
settles in the bottom of the jars. Thus they flip them over in
hopes the cake will sink some into the lid allowing the bottom
to colonize. Though it's not a proven method.
