First tub grow
    #16826008 - 09/10/12 09:41 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I have three tubs with HP and straw.  I spawned one quart of rye into each small tub and filled each tub 3-4" covered with foil and poked some holes in the foil.  Checked on them to day and everything looks right on track.  Just one question, since I am going from cakes to tubs.  All the tubs will fit in my SGFC with room to spare. I have around 4-5" of perlite in the bottom.  Once I case the trays do I set them into my FC and mist and fan just as usual.  Thanks for the help

P.S. Besides Bill Hicks being right, I credit all my success to this site and it's users Dirt OUt............................

How do you check on them if they have foil on them? are you lifting it everyday???  If so cut that out!  You should wait 10-14 days to let it colonize that way it doesnt get a bunch of FAE and pin before 100%

I taped a small peace of clear  plastic in each corner of the foil as a viewing window.  I have been keeping the tubs in dark under my FC when my 12/12 light comes on I pulled out the tubs and checked on them.  Just for peace of mind to see how things were progressing. now that I know that they are taking off I'll check on them in 10-12 day from now, although they might finish fast from what I've seen.

They may finish faster if the tub is smaller.  10-14 days is just a good time frame.  If it hits 100% at 7 days the extra time wont hurt it.

I don't quite know what my spawn to sub ratio, but I would bet that the it was more like 60% sub to 40% spawn.  The tubs are not real big, right around 10"x5"x5". Still need to know about misting and fanning and how will the tubs fare in the SGFC I am using now, what da ya think

The tubs in the SGFC will be fine.  If want you can also pop it out of the tub and put on foil and treat it like a cake.

As for misting and fanning mist few times a day and fan after you mist.  However the sgfc is designed so you dont even have to mist.  Its just done to help get moisture back into the sub that is lost from evaporation

After reading your thread you didn't state if you were cultivating Psilocybe Cubensis or another type. If doing cubes they don't need a casing. If you are adamant on using one 50/50 peat/vermiculite works using about a 1cm layer. I never use casing and they fruit fine. Evaporation on surface is key. Mist and fan and you'll get a nice pinset casing or not. Good luck!:super:

Check daily, or every other day, just dont lift the lid. Keep using your little viewing window. Using the SGFC will work just fine.

And yes, no casing layer and fan and mist as normal.

Cubes don't really benefit from using a casing layer.

do they use more casing layers for mono tubs grow, because it seems that all the mini and mono tub pics I've seen are using a casing layer, just want to get it right.  the move from cakes to tubs is quite exciting. thanks for the help

Some people do indeed use casing layers for cubes. After asking many, many people about it, most of everyone I have ever talked to said that it was pretty much a waste of time to case a tub of cubes. People who do casing layers usually are doing pans, or something along those lines. You CAN use casing layers, it just doesn't help much. Sometimes people suggest using wax paper as a casing layer. That might be an idea if you're really wanting to do a casing layer.

sorry the home made brandy is messing with me.  When you say pans, do you mean pans as in small tubs/pans or strain

Sorry didn't get a chance to get back to you last night on this. I see another person was able to clarify. To add when you also asked about monotubs: yeah no casing there either I have 2 going at the moment and all are fruiting fine with NO casing. Take care and wish you the best on a great first flush on your project!
