Do these Coir trays look healthy?
    #16815833 - 09/09/12 07:50 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

These three trays are 1 quart rye mycelium to 1 q. coir, and they are in a Martha set up with cool mist. Getting an obvious poor pinset and size, so I am thinking Casing will be in the next run.

But to you guys, are there any contaminants? I'm looking at the small white dots spread over the surface of the coir, what looks to be intermixed with cube mycelium. Or is it all healthy? I want to munch some of these small ones I just harvested...

Maybe a bit dry, but they look fine to me other than that.  You'll probably get better results on your second flush after the dunk.

:whathesaid:  I bet the second flush goes better.  You can crumple up a piece of wax paper and place it on your cakes as a casing layer with some success.

Are you getting FAE through the coolmist being outside the GH?  If so, what does RH in the GH stay at/bounce betwixt?  I ask to ensure you are getting evaporation on the tops of the cakes, followed, of course, by replacement moisture.  This process is one of the main pinning triggers, as you may well know.  Though in GH, I think, can be semi-difficult to due the difficulty in quickly raising RH.

thanks for the responses!

Coolmist is outside martha, all inside of a closet. I have an Ultrasonic that I wanted to use, (this is my first grow ever), but realized that my Ultrasonic wont work with a Timer. It will switch on but not off.... so every once in a while (like twice a day if I'm home) ill manually turn the Ultrasonic on for 20 minutes on High. But still lookin pretty dry

Also, still need to order a legit hygrometer... that way i can tell you my Humidity, but from the looks of the Martha, there is humid air inside just with the Coolmist. not sure if it is enough.

I understand that the evaporation of humidity from the surface is key, especially for my tray that hasnt started pinning...

anyways thanks for the tips peeps, ill keep it updated with a hopefully bigger flush next time.

What kind of timer have you been trying to use with the ultrasonic?  What brand/model of ultrasonic is it?

I had a coolmist (I forget the exact model)  and it couldn't keep my GH to RH very well unless it was inside the GH itself.  Though my GH was quite large 112 ft³.

Mist a bit heavier I suppose if it is possible, or run the ultrasonic a few more times a day.  It is a shame your ultrasonic wont turn off on timer.  Are you sure the timer is set to timer?  Sometimes I have accidentally left mine switched to on all times.  Hopefully its that simple.

Its a 15 dollar heavy duty appliance timer than can run every 15 minutes.

My Ultrasonic is a Homedics Cool & warm mist ultrasonic which can be set to Cool or warm. there is a button that you have to press to turn on. If it is on, the timer will shut it off, but wont turn it back on... i have to press the button.

dumb mistake on my part not making sure it is timer friendly. Or is there a way to over-ride the machine?! i think i screwed myself haha

The only way I know of would be to bypass the button...but I don't recommend doing that at all.  Your probably going to be better off grabbing one of the $25 walgreen's ultrasonics, they work great with any timer.

If you want to get into multiple or large greenhouses, this is the coolest humidifier ever: http://myco-tek.org/content.php?230-55-Gallon-Bulk-Humidifier-Tek

I'm planing to use it for my new 6x5x6 walk in greenhouse.

That is a solid looking humidifier.  I built one similar, the toughest part, I think, is attaching the blower in an efficient/simple manner.

I like the ducting connectors they used.  Looks like it'll be simple to set up, sturdy, and very effective  The only change I'm going to make is that instead of using a 5 disk fogger, I'm going to use 2 3 disk foggers.  That way if 1 fogger goes out, I don't lose functionality while I wait on a new one.

Indeed, I have been using one 3 head fogger on an 18 gallon.  Though I hear they break on a dime, I really should have a backup on hand.

I'm just curious to see how quickly it fogs up the greenhouse I've designed.  It's going to have at least 180sq/ft to supply fresh air and humidity to, and I think it'll work quite well.
